At Christchurch, February 18

At Christchurch, February 18. England won by 54 runs. England, surprisingly put in on a cracked pitch with a loose top-surface, were in trouble when Hadlee dismissed Lamb, Botham and Gatting in seven balls to make them 109 for five in the 35th over. But Randall maintained his sparkling form with 70 off 85 balls and found the partner he needed in Marks. New Zealand were well placed before Edgar's dismissal in the thirteenth over. But two run-outs, the second brought about by a brilliant diving stop by Smith at square leg to strand Howarth, helped reduce them to 44 for five in the 22nd over. Cairns, promoted, rekindled hope, straight-driving Marks out of the ground; but in gloomy light New Zealand were thwarted by a combination of accurate bowling and fine fielding.
Man of the Match: D. W. Randall. Attendance: 27,258.
