At Dunedin, March 9. England won by five wickets. Toss: New Zealand. Although it took them until the final over to complete their victory, England always looked likely winners after restricting New Zealand to 204 by taking their last five wickets for 16 runs. Emburey, having taken only three wickets during the Test series, now captured four, but New Zealand badly lost their way after Wright had given them a splendid start with a fluent 70 from 91 balls. Needing to score at a shade better than 4 runs an over, England began well enough. But crisis loomed when Broad, having looked capable of a match-winning innings, was thrown out by Crowe to leave them 68 for three in the 21st over. Gatting scored at a run a ball to restore command, and 78 in nineteen overs from Fairbrother and Capel made victory all but certain. Capel's fine 48 ended with England 13 short and two overs left, but Fairbrother won the match with a flurry of fours. Chatfield's remarkably economical bowling was to no avail.
