Close Canterbury 311 for 3 (Papps 147*, Fulton 83) lead Northern Districts 206 by 105 runs
Michael Papps scored an unbeaten 147, as Canterbury scored 311 for 3 to gallop past Northern Districts's first-innings total of 206 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
In fine conditions, Papps and Peter Fulton - another batsman in outstanding form - broke the state's second-wicket record against Northern Districts by adding 190 runs, overtaking the long-standing 167 scored by Graham Dowling and Terry Jarvis in 1970-71. Fulton was eventually dismissed for 83, and Gary Stead fell soon after, but Chris Harris stood firm with 32 at the end of the day.
Close Wellington 75 for 0 (Bell 38*, Donaldson 34*) trail Otago 465 (Morland 56) by 390 runs
More pain lay in store for Wellington, as Otago's tail wagged on the second morning at Carisbrook, with Nathan Morland striking a half-century and the lower order rallying around him to help the team reach 465.
Replying to the huge total, Wellington reached 75 without loss when played ended for the day. Matthew Bell, the Wellington captain and former international, was 38 not out and Grant Donaldson was on 34, making sure no wickets were lost with two days to go.
Earlier, Wellington's bowlers could not wrap up the innings on the good batting track, as Otago's lower bats hung around for nearly 30 overs. The bowlers had to toil for their wickets, and this was reflected by their figures: Mark Gillespie finished with 3 for 93, James Franklin 3 for 94 and Matthew Walker 2 for 90.
Close Central Districts 201 and 141 for 2 (Sinclair 47*, Spearman 46*)lead Auckland 231 (Walmsley 48, Thompson 5-43) by 110 runs
After Central Districts scored 201, Auckland's first-innings almost ended in disaster, until an 82-run stand for the last wicket took them to 231, at Eden Park's outer oval. Brooke Walker (33*) and Kerry Walmsley (48) hung on gamely to get their side first innings points, until Walmsley fell to Ewen Thompson, who finished with figures of 5 for 43.
By stumps, CD had wiped off the deficit and moved ahead by 110 with eight wickets in hand. Mathew Sinclair (47*) and Craig Spearman, scoring an attacking 46 with two sixes, were at the crease.
