Hartley, who spent three successful seasons with the club before announcing his retirement in 2000, is thought to be excited by the prospect of putting something back into the game he enjoyed for well over 20 years.
It was in 1999, the second of his three years with Hampshire, when the Keighley-born Yorkshireman was thrust into county cricket folklore, when he took the match-winning caught and bowled, via a fumble and a juggle, against Derbyshire to secure Hampshire's place amongst the County Championship elite, in a thrilling encounter on the last day of the season.
