Scorecard
Two contrasting half-centuries by John Crawley and Kevin Pietersen allowed Hampshire to take control against Glamorgan on a rain-hit opening day. In all 43 overs were lopped off by the weather, but Pietersen, in particular, set about making up for lost time. He racked up 11 boundaries in his 63-ball 57 and dominated a stand of 82 with Crawley. But Crawley's innings, while not as dashing, was equally important after Hampshire struggled to 37 for 2. Simon Jones, who managed 20 overs in the day as he attempts to prove his fitness, claimed Michael Brown following Andrew Davies' dismissal of Simon Katich for 20. The recovery was started sedately by Crawley and Greg Lamb, as they added 78, until Lamb was caught off Robert Croft. Pietersen then took over and continued to bolster the score at his own, electric, pace.
Scorecard
Nottinghamshire's patched-up seam attack put in a hardworking performance to dismiss Kent on the first day at Trent Bridge. Ryan Sidebottom was the pick of the bowlers, taking 5 for 61, his first five-wicket haul of the season. Oliver Newby, signed on loan from Lancashire, chipped in with two wickets including Andrew Hall for a second-ball duck. Three Nottinghamshire batsman struck half-centuries, but none could convert into a really significant innings. David Fulton (57) and Robert Key (32) opened with a stand of 81, and Matthew Walker made 51, but wickets fell steadily as Kent stuttered to 192 for 7. However, Niall O'Brien, the replacement wicketkeeper for Geraint Jones, hit a gutsy 64 and nursed the tail along to add valuable runs. The last three batsmen all reached double figures before Sidebottom and Mark Ealham wrapped up the innings in the closing stages of the day.
