After being pummelled by 293 runs in the first Test at Bangalore, the England Under-19 side found the going no easier in the second Test, which got under way at Kolkata today. After choosing to bat first at the Eden Gardens, they were bundled out for 147. And by the close of play on the first day, the Indians had whittled down the deficit to only 28, with eight wickets still in hand.
Of the England batsmen, only Joe Denly, the opener, got the measure of the Indian bowlers, scoring 56 before falling victim to Harvinder Singh's offspinners. Harvinder took two more wickets to finish with the excellent figures of 3 for 10, but India's most successful bowler was the legspinner Piyush Chawla, who took 4 for 37.
India began their innings confidently, with Shikhar Dhawan and Robin Uthappa adding 67 for the first wicket. Both fell before close of play, but Faiz Fazal and Ambati Rayudu ensured that the Indians ended the day well on top.
