Sri Lanka's cricket officials have confirmed that Arjuna Ranatunga will
contest for the post of board president against Thilanga Sumathipala, a
local businessman. The elections will be held on June 6. The Sri Lankan
board (BCCSL) has been governed by interim committees since March 2001.
Ranatunga entered politics after retiring from cricket in 1999 and is
currently a member of parliament. One of Ranatunga's long-standing
supporters on the cricket field, however, will be in the rival camp. Aravinda
de Silva is part of Sumathipala's group and will contest for the post of
vice-president.
