Northamptonshire have appointed David Ripley as captain for 2001, with Tony Penberthy as his deputy.
The 34-year-old wicketkeeper replaces Matthew Hayden, skipper for the past two seasons, who is expected to be involved in Australia's tour of England next summer.
Ripley made his county debut in 1984 and served as Hayden's vice-captain in both 1999 and 2000, while all-rounder Penberthy took charge on a couple of occasions last season, leading Northamptonshire to victory over Worcestershire in the first-ever floodlit National League game at Wantage Road.
Director of Cricket Bob Carter said: "David has done the job in Matthew's absence, most notably at the back end of 1999, and as far as I'm concerned his knowledge and experience make him the natural choice to take over."
"The same goes for Tony as vice-captain. He did well for us when he took over in those two games last year, and I know he'll give David excellent support."
Ripley is the first wicketkeeper to be officially appointed captain of Northamptonshire since Keith Andrew, who led the team successfully from 1962 to 1966.
He said: "This is something I was keen to do, once it was established that Matthew wouldn't be with us next year. I know it's only likely to be a short-term appointment because he's intimated that he'd like to come back in 2002."
"But it goes without saying that it's a great honour to be asked to captain the county. I'm really looking forward to it."
The decision was confirmed at a full meeting of the club's General Committee, following a recommendation made by the cricket sub-committee last month.
