Schools' cricket report

St. George's beat arch-rivals Prince Edward on Saturday by 85 runs, and in doing so won their first match of the school term.

St. George's batted first on their home pitch, and managed to score 273 for six in their allotted 50 overs, a large score at any level of the game, but an especially large one in schools cricket.

Gareth Crossland opened the batting and played a captain's innings of 91, and Quinton Steyn was the other big scorer, weighing in with 58 not out at the end. The pick of the Prince Edward bowlers was Philips who took two wickets for 26 runs in his 10 overs.

In reply Prince Edward were 188 all out, with Quincy Antipas providing the only real resistance with 60. Duncan Micklem had the best figures of the St. George's bowlers with two wickets for 35 runs from 10 overs, but Sean Barry, Ian de Grandhomme and Ian's younger brother Colin also took two wickets each.

St. George's performed well in the holiday cricket festival in the weeks leading up to the beginning of term, but lost first to Churchill on the first weekend of term, and then narrowly to Peterhouse the following weekend.

Prince Edward, on the other hand, had just played one game before Saturday, which they won, as they returned from their tour to Potchefstroom after school resumed.
