South Africa made up for their narrow opening-day defeat by West Indies with a clinical win against an overwhelmed Kenya. But victory came at a price: Rhodes, South Africa's effervescent talisman, broke a hand while failing to catch a fierce drive by Odumbe. Two days later, he announced his retirement from international cricket. In his absence, his team-mates still cantered home. Faced with a target of just 141, Gibbs pummelled a ferocious 87 off just 66 balls with 12 fours and four sixes - including 20 off an over of Odumbe off-breaks - while Kirsten finished with a measured 52 off 63 balls. The winning boundary came with more than 28 overs to spare. Earlier, Kenya's top order had struggled against the accuracy of Pollock and Ntini, although Shah, a shining exception, played attractively all round the wicket. When he was run out by Klusener after being sent back by Odumbe, Shah had hit all seven of Kenya's boundaries and almost two-thirds of their runs. Without him, Kenya folded: only three others reached double figures while Klusener, cleverly varying his pace, mopped up the tail to claim his best one-day-international figures for nearly three years.
