At Centurion, February 1, 2004. West Indies won by seven wickets. Toss: South Africa.
Challenged to score their highest one-day total against South Africa, West Indies did it with
five overs to spare to complete their first international victory since leaving Zimbabwe two months
earlier. Batsmen revelled in the first favourable conditions of the series, exploiting hot sunshine
and a true pitch in the one daytime match of the five. Between them, the teams hit eight sixes
and 53 fours, and amassed 597 runs from 95 overs. Kallis, with two sixes and seven fours, ended
five short of yet another hundred. But Chanderpaul trumped him with 92 off 75 balls, and ran up
108 in 19 overs with Sarwan. They paved the way for Lara, who smashed 59 in 37 balls, a fitting
finale to a welcome win.
Man of the Match: S. Chanderpaul. Attendance: 16,759.
