Sanath: another record
Sri Lanka's world batting record holder Sanath Jayasuriya has
contributed to yet another record, this time in a totally
different field due to his ever increasing popularity.
When his recent interview with the national television
Rupavahini was telecast on October 6, the electricity
consumption on national grid rose to a record level as almost
all television sets in Sri Lanka were switched on.
According to the Ceylon Electricity Board 's System Control, the
peak load rose to 1003 mega watts and this was for the first
time in the history that the electricity demand during peak
hours topped 1000 mark.
* Badulla Police suffered their first defeat in their Badulla
District league cricket tournament when they were beaten by 7
wickets against Old Thomians Sports Club played at the Badulla
esplanade.
A fine piece of bowling by C. S. Kaluarachchie (3 for 5)
restricted Badulla Police to a mere 92 for 8 in their allotted
overs. Old Thomians scored the required runs losing three
wickets. (S N. Thanthirige 35, J. Prasanna 27). Access Sports
Club recorded two consecutive wins against Reckitt and Colmans
and Janashakthi `B' Sports Club at the Mercantile `H' division
cricket tournament at MCA grounds.
In the first match, Reckitt & Colmans were shot out for 88 in
21.5 overs and in reply Access Sports Club scored 91 for 1 in
14.3 overs. In the second match too Access SC scored a
nine-wicket win. In reply to Janashakthi `B's 71 for 4 in 15
overs, Access Sports Club scored 76 for one in 9.1 overs.
(Abroad):
* Pakistan team will play a total of six Tests at home before
the end of this year. They will play three Tests each against
South Africa and the West Indies, and in between them, Pakistan
will host a four-nation limited over tournament which also
features World champions Sri Lanka.
Pakistan will host the West Indies for a three-Test tour in
November/ December this year. Paceman Courtney Walsh will lead
thee West Indies team which will make a six-week tour of
Pakistan to play in a Quadrangular one day tournament which will
be followed by the three-Test series against the hosts. The West
Indies will open the Pakistan tour with a game against the World
champions Sri Lanka in Lahore. On conclusion of the quadrangular
final on November 8, the West Indies will play a four-day game
against Pakistan Board X1 from November 11 to 14 in Rawalpindi
before moving to the first Test at Peshawar from November 17.

Royal made 23 for one wicket in reply to Richmond's first
innings of 213 for 8 declared on the opening day of the third
term inter-school cricket match played at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Chamara Soysa hit a sparkling century (123 with 2 sixes, 10
fours) to steer Dharmasoka to a first day total of 269 for 8
wickets in their third term schools cricket match against
Dharmaraja at Lake View yesterday.

Maliyadeva dismissed for 182
Fast bowler Dilhara Fernando took 5 for 65 to dismiss Maliyadeva
for 182 on the first day of the third term inter-school cricket
match at Kurunegala yesterday.
By the close De Mazenod had replied with 127 for 3 following a
98-run second wicket stand between Suraj de Alwis (52 with 9
fours) and Priyasad Seneviratne (60 with 4 sixes, 5 fours). The
match continuues today at 9.30 a.m.

Kingswood, on dismissing S. Thomas' for a comparatively moderate
score of 183, batted with no purpose or plan right through after
tea, to be 32 for 3 in their inter-school cricket encounter,
which began at Mt. Lavinia yesterday.

St.Peters in strong position
St. Peters college were in a strong position at the end of the
first days play in their inter-school cricket match against
Presidents College, Rajagiriya which began at Bambalapitiya
yesterday.
The Peterites batting first piled up 249 runs and had Presidents
College reeling at 81 for 5 at the close. Chief scores:
