†SRI LANKA v WEST INDIES

At Karachi, October 13

15-Apr-1988
At Karachi, October 13. West Indies won by 191 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. Richards, coming in with Ratnayeke on a hat-trick, set about the Sri Lankan bowling with such savagery that his own record highest score in a one-day international (189 not out off 170 balls against England) looked certain to be eclipsed. Instead, caught when aiming for another six, he had to settle for the highest individual score in a World Cup innings: 181 from 125 balls, with six sixes and sixteen fours. It was Richards's tenth hundred in one-day matches for West Indies, while Haynes's 105 (109 balls, one six, nine fours) was his ninth. West Indies' total was the highest in a one-day international, the previous being Pakistan's 338 for five off 60 overs in the 1983 World Cup. Then, as now, Sri Lanka's bowlers were on the receiving end. In reply, Mahanama and Kuruppu set off a rate of 12 an over; but this spectacular flourish did not survive the third over.
Man of the Match: I. V. A. Richards.
