Kenya's selectors have finally named their squad for next month's Intercontinental Cup semi-final against Scotland in Sharjah - and none of the players who went on strike earlier in the month are included.
The ending of the strike last week had seemed to open the door to many of the players who had been in dispute with the board. But the Kenyan board (KCA) told them that they had to reapply for selection, and an official said that none had done so. With the ICC putting pressure on for Kenya to name their squad, the selectors stuck with the makeshift side which drew with Namibia.
One absentee from that win will be Hitesh Modi, the captain, who is getting married in England on November 19, the day after the semi-final. Rageb Aga, a 20-year-old allrounder who made his international debut in the ICC Champions Trophy last month, will lead the side.
Two news faces in the squad are David Okumu, fast bowler, and Timothy Muange, a batsman/wicketkeeper. Both were included in the team to face Namibia but withdrew after coming under what they say was pressure from Swamibapa, their club side, to do so.
The omission of the striking players is likely to further widen the chasm between many of the players and the KCA. The terms on which the strike was ended - namely the payment of back-pay and a renegotiation of contracts - appear to have been effectively ignored, and there is considerable scepticism regarding the need for the players to re-apply to be picked for the national side.
