James Anderson's 4 for 29 against Pakistan under the Cape Town lights in the World Cup was the performance of a lifetime ... or so we thought at the time. In fact, he needed just four months to trump it. Today at The Oval, James Anderson picked up 4 for 27, with a wicket from the first ball of the match, and a hat-trick to wrap up Pakistan's innings.
Just like his illuminating display at Newlands, Anderson bowled to his strengths: fast and straight, and with a touch of late swing. As our graphic shows, he bowled over half of his deliveries (32 out of 54) on a good length, and the Pakistani batsmen could only squirt 15 runs through the off side.
Anderson conceded only eight runs on the leg side, the majority of which came from his sparsely-used short balls, and to further highlight his control, nothing at all was driven straight down the ground. Yousuf Youhana top-scored with 75 not out, but he struggled to break free from Anderson's tight line-and-length, scoring only six runs from the 18 balls he faced.
