Torn ACL ends Ferguson's season

Callum Ferguson has been ruled out of the remainder of Australia's 2015-16 summer season after suffering an ACL tear in his left knee. Ferguson picked up the injury while fielding for the Melbourne Renegades in a practice match ahead of the Big Bash League, and a decision on whether the batsman will undergo a full fitness reconstruction will be taken after consulting with specialists in Adelaide.

Ferguson had begun the 2015-16 domestic season strongly, scoring 478 runs for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield from five matches at an average of 53.11, including a career-best 211 against Tasmania last month.

"We're just so incredibly disappointed and really feel for Callum right now, but he has still got plenty of cricket ahead of him and we look forward to helping him back to full fitness," Tim Nielse, SACA's high performance general manager, said. "Callum has been in fantastic form this year in both the Matador Cup and Sheffield Shield, coming off an outstanding double-century a few weeks ago.

"He's an important part of our Redbacks squad - our main concern right now is that he gets the treatment and rehabilitation he needs."

Since making his international debut in 2009, Ferguson has played three T20Is and 30 ODIs, but none since April 2011. He had earlier suffered a knee injury prior to the 2004 Under-19 World Cup, and again during the 2009 Champions Trophy in South Africa.

"He's a great man and such a good player that if it is bad news it will be his third or fourth knee (reconstruction)," Aaron Finch, the Renegades captain, said. "It's disappointing news and shocking for Callum. All we can do is hope for the best on the scan."
