†WEST INDIES v INDIA 1988-89

At St John's, March 18

15-Apr-1990
At St John's, March 18. West Indies won by eight wickets. Toss: India. Despite putting up their highest total of the series, India were heavily beaten. On a splendid pitch, their attack was savaged by Greenidge, whose 117 included six fours and a one-day international record of eight sixes, surpassing the seven by Richards against India at Rajkot the previous year. Greenidge and Haynes put on 86 in seventeen overs and then Greenidge and Richardson added 130 in only ten. India called on seven bowlers to repel this onslaught, which they might have been spared if Robin Singh, at backward square leg, had not missed Greenidge, then 41, from a sweep at Ajay Sharma. But India themselves had benefited from a dropped chance, Richards, at gully, letting off Shastri. His dismissal then would have left India 76 for four. Instead his century partnership with Vengsarkar, whose fluent 88 included six fours, gave the Indian total its substance. Before the pitch settled into an ideal one for batting, it offered a lot of bounce, which Bishop used to remove the Indian openers for only 11 runs.
Man of the Match: C. G. Greenidge.
