Chris Jordan stole the show at the ground he used to call home. Once of Surrey, now at Sussex, he made a belligerent unbeaten 38 off 13 balls to propel England to 247 for six in an innings reduced by rain to 39 overs. Then he took three for three to undermine Sri Lanka's reply. Bell and Ballance had made fine fifties, but England were in trouble at 152 for five, after Senanayake removed Ballance and Bopara in quick succession. Root resurrected them, before 93 came off the last seven overs; Jordan ended the innings with a straight six off Malinga, whose eight wicketless overs cost 71. Set 259 in 39, Sri Lanka were 60 for two in 13.3 when rain stopped play once more. Another recalculation left them needing a further 166 at virtually nine an over. Wickets fell regularly, with Tredwell grabbing three, and the last six tumbled for 36 - including Mathews, who departed on the reverse sweep to an excellent running catch by Cook at short third man. It was Sri Lanka's first one-day defeat in 11 completed matches.
