Dhawan to captain Sunrisers in CLT20

ESPNcricinfo staff

India opener Shikhar Dhawan has been named captain of the IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming Champions League Twenty20.

In the IPL this season, Sunrisers were initially led by Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara but he was later replaced by Australia's Cameron White. While Sangakkara has chosen to play for Sri Lankan outfit Kandurata Maroons in the Champions League, White remains in the Sunrisers squad for the tournament.

Dhawan, who has captained Delhi in the past, was eager to get cracking in the new role. "I have captained the Delhi team for a while now but this is a new challenge. It's an honour to lead a team like the Sunrisers because it has some big players, and I am really looking forward to it."

Tom Moody, the head coach of Sunrisers, believes Dhawan was the right appointment. "Having excelled in the Indian team over the recent past, Shikhar has dominated as a batsman and has been more than consistent," Moody said. "He is a complete package as a player and is considered a real team man. That's why we have decided to elevate him and make him our new captain."

Dhawan heads into the three-week long tournament on the back of a series of consistent performances including a Man-of-the-Series display in the Champions Trophy where he scored a tournament-leading 363 runs, and a record-breaking 248 for the A team against South Africa A in Pretoria.

"Shikhar is ready to take on this honour and has shown great leadership qualities in the past," Moody said. "His recent experiences on the international stage and now the captaincy role will only enhance his reputation as a top-grade cricketer."

Sunrisers will begin their CLT20 campaign with their first qualifying match on Tuesday, incidentally against Kandurata.

I guess White will sit out. JP Duminy is a better middle order player than anybody in the Sunrisers batting lineup. And Thisara and Sammy will be finishing touch to the innings. So Duminy, Thisara, Sammy and Steyn should be four foreign players. And maybe this is the reason selectors chose Dhawan as Captain.

I would prefer sammy as captain and the choice between white and jp in the playing XI it should be steyn perera sammy jp or white with jp a bit more chance for his all round skills

siri12345 ..Really,wow tell me another good story..You mean to say that Thisara Perera is the nucleus of the franchisee and others have been built around him..which parallel planet are you on..I really appreciate the team management for not taking such decision

When you have Sammy, you make Dhawan the captain?? Stupidity Mr. Moody...

We know what Duminy can do on tracks like Mohali, if we go back to inaugural CLT20 where he scored a 99* in Bangalore to stun the RCB. This decision has primarily come through to accommodate him. He's a gun fielder and mighty useful with the ball. He's a complete package for T20 cricket, but question lies who sits out between Sammy and White ???

i would say a really really poor choice from the team management.they could have easily given the captaincy to thisara perera to motivate him because i would say the sun risers team revolves around thisara largely depends upon thisara perera,s performance and others will act as a supporting role toperera.if perera performs team win ,if not team looses its that perera would have been the captain of the side with dhawan as his deputy.

Congrats. to Dhawan for a richly deserved honour of leading the Sun Risers. With Guys like Duminy, Steyn, White, Sammy, Parera still available, the Sun Risers have a good chance to qualify. Karan Sharma & A.Mishra were 2 great leg spinners who helped the SRH in IPL 6. Only sad part is that Hyderabad ground is no longer a venue for these qualifying round. It is still a tough team to beat. Good luck SRH.

I agree with some of my fellow commentators here. Dhawan is pretty green to be captain of the SRH team in this competition. Sammy would have been a wise choice given his established credential and pedigree as winner of the World T20 with the WI team. Still, I am sure White and Sammy will offer Shikar with valuable advice from time to time. It's always a good thing to see an Indian player captain an IPL team given the majority of the team composition is still Indian.
