Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena has won the David Shepherd trophy for the Umpire of the Year at the ICC Awards ceremony in Colombo. It is the first time he has won this award.

The other nominees were five-time winner Simon Taufel, three-time winner Aleem Dar, along with New Zealand's Billy Bowden, England's Richard Kettleborough and Australia's Rodney Tucker.

"This award means a lot to me, after playing cricket for 12 years. It's for the Sri Lankan umpires and the community who looked after my growth," Dharmasena said after accepting his award from Graham Gooch. "Honestly, I feel I had a great year on and off the field and I feel having been a cricketer has helped me with my decision making as an umpire and to give better decisions."

The David Shepherd Trophy for ICC Umpire of the Year was voted on by the 10 current Test captains and the Elite Panel of ICC match referees and is partly based on the umpires' performance statistics.

Dharmasena, who made his international debut as an umpire in 2009, joined the Elite Panel in May 2011. In the voting period he stood in seven Tests and 13 ODIs.

Hahahahaha Ridiculous decision. Can someone count the mistake of Aleem Dar/Simon Taufel and the winner Dhermasena. I am pretty sure Both Aleem Dar and Simon Taufelr did least mistakes

  • mirfaizan on September 17, 2012, 13:57 GMT

ICC need DRS for there decision not to pick any Pakistani specially Aleem dar and saeed ajmal, even hashim amla who scored heavily throughout the year..

  • the_wallster on September 17, 2012, 10:32 GMT

Absolutely baffling. I was amazed when I saw his name on the shortlist. the ICC should be thinking about rescinding his Elite Umpire status. Every time I see him he makes at least a couple of mistakes. In the England v Safrica series he had his decision overturned by DRS about 7 times. He was clueless. Aleem Dar or Kettleborough would have justified this award. And HOW is Billy Bowden still and umpire?!?!

4th test Aus vs India: Khan to Marsh, OUT, oh dear, Marsh has been given leg before, was that in line with off? Nope, he has got a rough one, the ball would have taken out off, but he was struck outside the line, nothing going Marsh's way at the moment

  • Hafeez_Malik on September 17, 2012, 6:16 GMT

Ist test bangladesh-v-west-indies-2011 38.1 Samuels to Shahriar Nafees, no run, pads away to an armer, and this was surely plumb! That was hitting off and middle, how is that not out Mr. Dharmasena? 2nd Test 32.1 Shahadat Hossain to Bravo, no run, angled in from outside off, defended back to the bowler. The umpire seems to have let the previous over go with just five ball.

69.3 Bishoo to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, much closer, big appeal for lbw turned down. Another straight one that hurries in towards middle and leg as Rahim plays back. Was that missing leg? Dharmasena thinks so, I don't. India vs West Indies 1st test 79.5 Ashwin to Baugh, 1 run, 86.8 kph, optimistic lbw appeal, umpire Dharmasena says no since it hit just outside the line of off stump. Given a run, which seems to be the wrong call. 14.3 Sharma to KA Edwards, no run, 139.0 kph, that's got to be really close, it was pitched up and homing in on the stumps, umpire Dharmasena is unmoved, replays do not

I agree with this award, this guy has impressed me a great deal. I am yet to see him make a poor decision. I do agree Aleem is the best over time, overall though, but this guy deserves to win it this year.

Worst decision ever made by ICC!

  • on September 16, 2012, 7:06 GMT

@Upul T, yes correct , KD is having best rate of success of decisions and he seems having sense. also improving. also who is member of '96 team. but KD is one who made most unfair decisions against sri lanka in last year .but there were some very clumsy moments which missed in small margins. in his rate against sri lanka as i saw it is less the 50:50 .i am pretty sure this is a so decisive factor as sri lanka is the team played most cricket last year and we lost some tournaments by very little margins ..

  • on September 16, 2012, 4:33 GMT

To all those people who are surprised to see him getting this award, please note that this award was given based on the voting from captains and match referees.

  • davidatlas999 on September 16, 2012, 3:55 GMT

@Upul Theverapperuma i think you are right Kumar Dharmasena had the best percentage of correct decisions in the given period of evaluation.because alim dar is above then any percentage hardly any one can say in past year alim dar have any one bad umpiring.

  • redbrand on September 16, 2012, 3:49 GMT

send it to UDRS, isn't that where howlers are meant to go?

  • on September 16, 2012, 3:27 GMT

In the matches I saw him umpiring this year, I was highly impressed, and at that time my gut feeling was that he is one among the very best in the Elite Panel, and I genuinly feel that he deserve this prize. So I'm not surprised or puzzled at this selection. -An avid Indian Cricket fan!

  • AMAZINGFAN on September 16, 2012, 2:12 GMT

aleem dar and simon taufel are the best umpires in the world.not dharmasena.

  • johnathonjosephs on September 16, 2012, 1:08 GMT

You can argue about what you think is a "howler" and what really is not. Dharmasena, in my opinion, had a phenomenal year and this man is ever improving. There is something in the psychological textbooks call "reciprocal memory" where one remembers past things somebody did even if the person changed. Dharmasena's inital years as an umpire were not good. He made HUGE mistakes and I think most fans here are only remembering those. This year, he was one of the best umpires out there and he has come along way from his initial years. Compare his performances with those umpires who were in the Middle East for the England/Pakistan series and made mistakes every other ball

  • on September 16, 2012, 0:44 GMT

I didn't see him umpiring that much. Was he any good ?

  • on September 16, 2012, 0:34 GMT

Kumar Dharmasena had the best percentage of correct decisions in the given period of evaluation which was the best among all umpires including Alim Dhar and Simon Taufal. Some of you may have not seem him lately. He has improved by leaps during the last 18 months. When he officiates for Pakistan matches in the future you will see why he is among the best. He is a very hard worker, everyone here knows it. He was a member of the world cup winning side in 1996.

  • darrelj on September 15, 2012, 23:41 GMT

as cricket followers we must look at performance and stats no matter from what part of the world you come. Watching all of the matches that Kumar officiated I always thought he would top the list one day (not so soon anyway). Look at the confidence shown by Kumar even being a fresher to umpiring. Alam Dar for me is 2nd best. Well done Kumar.

  • on September 15, 2012, 23:35 GMT

Quite Shocking .. I dun know What Criteria has been adopted by ICC now .. Aleem , Simon and some other umpires are still far better .. any ways Gudluck and Congrats Mr Dharmaseena :)

  • on September 15, 2012, 23:07 GMT

Aleem Dar and Simon Taufel is the best.

  • on September 15, 2012, 22:54 GMT

Can espncricinfo share stats of Aleem Dar, Simon Taufel and Dharmasena for the voting period! How many of their reviewed decisions went in their favour and how many against them?

  • Tharaka_N on September 15, 2012, 22:51 GMT

To all the Cricket Pandiths who have commented here.....Kumar Dharmasena is one of the rarest umpires in world cricket to have made it to the Elite Panel in just his 2nd year as an international umpire. I am pretty sure none of you watched the England vs South Africa series where KD stood alongside the likes of Simon Taufel and still got a better decision rate. So pls be more aware of "facts" before you make funny comments. ICC wouldnt make a stupid call in their official awards ceremony..common..!!!

  • on September 15, 2012, 22:05 GMT

aleem dar is best very poor darmanasena

  • on September 15, 2012, 21:41 GMT

I think Aleem Dar and Simon Taufel are way better than this guy. This was quite a shock

  • on September 15, 2012, 21:14 GMT

Utterly unbelievable. Dharmasena made at least five howlers in one Test alone - the 3rd Test between England & South Africa - as well as another few in the ODI series which followed. I remember thinking at the time that I hadn't seen a more comically inept umpire since the retirements of Rudi Koertzen, Steve Bucknor & Daryl Harper. Presumably the ICC's 'calculations' cover a parallel universe.

  • on September 15, 2012, 19:51 GMT

    Simply no comments......

  • on September 15, 2012, 19:48 GMT

well kumar darmasena made lot of decisions gainst his own country sri lanka. most were so crtitical, simply in last indian tour in sri lanka India won series because of their 12 th player KD .

but to be fair to him he is the best ever umpire sri lanka ever made where as he is having all basic features a devils advocate should have .you sri lanka unfortunate.

but fun is one one start to win best umpire of the year award normally it continues for at least for one more year . so what we can do with out looking at how he raises his finger. good luck KD.from school we knew you were having all these basic features. you have proven it at Indian tournament in front of your own crowd .then you are eligible more than any one else to be awarded .:)

  • on September 15, 2012, 19:02 GMT

thats amazing, a third rated umpire has been termed world number 1

  • on September 15, 2012, 18:52 GMT

  • Guru14 on September 15, 2012, 18:27 GMT

Sangakara wins 3 top awards, Dharmasena umpire of the year. BTW where is this event taking place? Certainly not Colombo?!?

In my opinion Sanagakara deserved ICC player of the year, but Test playerof the year - Amla and Aleem Dar is Umpire of the year. I have nothing against Sangakara or Dharmasena. it is just Amla and Aleem were better.

  • on September 15, 2012, 18:26 GMT

not umpire of the year.. its Joke of the year..

  • on September 15, 2012, 18:26 GMT

this is not good for Aleem Dar ......... aleem dar is the best umpire in the world

  • pachako on September 15, 2012, 18:21 GMT

If you play with UDRS Dharmasena is an ordinary umpire. if you do not play with UDRS(Indian matches)yes defintley you are better umpire

  • SriLankanLions on September 15, 2012, 18:21 GMT

Everyone who thinks Kumar doesn't deserve the award is pathetic. Yes, Dar and Taufel are exceptional umpires. But it doesn't mean that no one else can surpass them. Kumar improved a lot during last 18 months or so. I'm pretty sure he'll win the award next time as well. Good luck Mr. Kumar Dharmasena!

  • Fahii on September 15, 2012, 18:21 GMT

What a joke this is.......all nominis are better than Kumar Dharmasena atleast.

  • on September 15, 2012, 18:21 GMT

Really shocked by this. Aleem Dar is the strong candidate for this.

  • on September 15, 2012, 18:12 GMT

Bruce Oxenford is better than Dharmasena. He is very Good UMPIRE. But Aleem Dar is Best.

  • RaheelR on September 15, 2012, 17:53 GMT

What Kumar Dharmasena??? I think they are gone mad .......Aleem Dar is the best choice by far

  • Master_Mihil on September 15, 2012, 17:51 GMT

I haven't watched all the matches Dharmasena umpired! and haven't watched every ball Dharmasena decided. I think it's true to all the commenters. Including the worst Dharmasena haters (which country they belong to is anyone's guess!!) so i think the award has been given by people who closely monitored him. So i congratulate Unanduwa "Good effort -Man" to his award. And those who don't "i don't mind".

  • on September 15, 2012, 17:51 GMT

The David Shepherd Trophy for ICC Umpire of the Year was voted on by the 10 current Test captains and the Elite Panel of ICC match referees and is partly based on the umpires' performance statistics so i guess he won it fair and square..Aleem Dar is superb as well, with Taufel

  • Zahidsaltin on September 15, 2012, 17:30 GMT

Is it a joke? I remember a lot of decisions within last 12 months where he got it wrong.

  • Perera32 on September 15, 2012, 17:10 GMT

Guys Dharmasena got 98% of all his decisions right in both Tests and ODI's. Aleem Dar and Simon Taufel are brilliant but the stats prove Dharmasena right. Give credit where its due.

I fail to understand why Aleem Dar was not given the Umpire of the year award. He was fantastic through out the year earning praise from all the players & commentators as well. To my knowledge he made more correct decisions than any other umpire so how come he did not get the best umpire award????

  • on September 15, 2012, 15:49 GMT
