Canada unhappy with reduced World Cup

Chandra Gocool, Cricket Canada's chief executive, has questioned the ICC's thinking on developing cricket around the world following the decision to shrink the 2015 World Cup to 10 teams, but expand the World Twenty20 to 16 teams.

"Being an Associate Member country that has moved past T20 being the 'lightning rod' to our development, as we play the other two forms of the game currently, it begs the question - what do we aspire to?" Gocool told ESPNcricinfo.

The ICC has asked its governing council to examine the issue of qualification for ICC global events and make recommendations to the board, but Gocool says a 10-team event makes the likelihood of an Associate Member playing in the World Cup a challenging prospect. "Much depends on what the qualification process will look like for Associates to grow and be able to be part of this event in future."

Canada has played in the 1979, 2003 and 2007 World Cups and while they have not thought through what kind of qualification process they would like, one thing they do want is a "workable ranking system and clear criteria developed to provide the top Associates reasonable opportunities to match their skills against the Full Member countries."

Gocool said there had been no conversations between the ICC and Canada about the proposals since they were first put forward by the ICC's chief executives committee last month. At the time he said the proposals would create a glass ceiling and the "challenge will be [to see] how we break through."

Still Gocool was hopeful that a system could be found that would benefit everyone. "Time will only tell, but the hope is still there that there will be opportunities for Associate Member countries to pit their prowess against the best."

The idea of 10 team world cup could be a good idea, but only IF the 3 year ODI competition includes the six temp ODI teams (ie: top 6 ODI assoc teams). I recommend 16 team comp over 3 years home & away, 3 matches each (90 ODI's) with top 8 teams (top half) qualifying and 9th to 12th playing against 17th to 20th ODI teams for 2 spots. The alternate is two tiers of 8 teams with tier 1 6 teams progress, 2 to eliminators, tier 2 2 teams progress, 4 to eliminators with teams 17 to 20 joining to make 10 teams. WC results could be used to decide which tiers each team goes into (top 8 tier 1, next 2 tier 2 with next 6 from eliminators). The tier'ed approach would make better competition, but more complex and I doubt the full members would agree. Either way the full members should be required to qualify for WC, with the inclusion that the WC host nation (2015 is Aust & NZ) with the most points in qualifying is guaranteed a spot (ie: 2015 Aust or NZ are guaranteed a spot).

ICC should look forward to secure the best of cricket. I don't like to see someone underestimating others for their power of muscles. they should remember the matches of 1996 WC Kenya vs Mighty Windies 1999 WC Bangladesh Vs Finalist Pakistan,2003 WC Bangladesh vs Canada, Kenya vs Srilanka, 2007 wc Bangladesh vs India, Ireland vs Pakistan, Bangladesh vs South Africa, Bangladesh vs Ireland. . . These tiny but glorious moment s only came at the big stage like world cup. . . So at least 4 associates should be let to play in the world cup. . .

"Would love to see Bd loosing to other associates :)". . . What a comment man! Like it''l be loving to see Bd thrashing India in the opener of 2011 WC. if the powerhouse of cricket were keen to spread cricket worldwide they wouldn't cut tours for sake of commerce. Like India they haven't invited BD for a single tour in India. And now Australia and England will be following them. And ICC has taken to cut WC. Wonderful! And they are talking about spreading cricket. How would you spread cricket in the associate countries if you don't allow them to compete in a major tournament? Oh yeah I'm seeing the future of cricket. It'll rather be a regional sports for South Asia than an International sport. Like Australia Cricket is ranked 3rd falling behind soccer and Lawn tennis. ICC should look forward to secure the best for cricket. And please don't take this as a personal attack to anybody here.

If this system was implemented earlier, then we would not have had countries like Bangladesh even in the 2003 and 2007 World Cups. A radical ,game changing move by the ICC here and may be for a reason. The 2015, being held in Australia might just have something to do with the competitiveness of nations out there. Its a bit harsh, but mandatory to keep out unworthy participants. As an alternative to please them, reduce the Cup to 12 nations, which shall make a lot more sense

10 teams - one of the most inward looking decisions for a long time. No one likes some of the one-sided contests but without opportunity for the associate teams, cricket will dry up to just a select few instead of closing the gap on soccer as a world game.

ICC should create a seperate division for Associate teams...Canada,Ireland,Scotland,Kenya,Afganistan & Netherlands can compete...this teams should tour each other just as top 9 teams do...!

I hope there would be a 8 Nation qualification with top 6 Associate's and bottom 2 test teams playing and top 2 qualifying. It shud be a round robin with all teams playing other 7 and not broken into pool's of 2. That will give enough playing to all and the best 2 qualify. Under present ranking the 8 teams would look like Zim, BD, Ire, Neth, Afg, Scot, Can & Ken. If they play looks like it would be Zimbabwe along with Ireland or Afghanistan that will qualify. That way an interesting world cup, everybody gets to play a lot and the best qualify.

This tournament should be held just before the CWC 2015 and that too in Aus, NZ so that everybody notices, wath & Follow this tournament. The good associate performances will be noted. Would love to see Bd loosing to other associates :)
