PCB defends Waqar appointment

ESPNcricinfo staff

The PCB has defended its decision to name Waqar Younis as the national team's head coach, a day after Mohsin Khan blasted the appointment process. Mohsin, one of the contenders for the coach's job, had called the process a 'total farce', questioning why he had not been interviewed.

Zaheer Abbas, the former Pakistan captain who is now principal advisor to the PCB chairman, explained why Mohsin had not been interviewed. "The procedure is that we usually interview candidates about whom we have no or little information," Abbas said. "But Mohsin's case was different; he is quite familiar to us and we are aware of his strengths and weaknesses."

Mohsin had previously been Pakistan's coach in 2012, when he guided them to a famous 3-0 Test series sweep against then No. 1 England. Mohsin and Waqar were in the race for the top role and on Tuesday, the PCB appointed Waqar, who returned for a second term after his previous stint between March 2010 and August 2011.

Another former Pakistan captain, Intikhab Alam, who is now PCB's director of domestic cricket, also defended Waqar's appointment. "For the position of head coach we took a lot of other factors into account," Alam said. "We looked at an applicant's ability to be inclusive and take players along with him. After reviewing all seven applications on merit, we recommended Waqar Younis."

Why not compare these two with Whatmore and why his contract not extended till world cup. Questions!!

Regardless of you know someone or not. The process should equally be followed for everyone.

Appointment of waqar against qayuum report. One hundred thousand fine. Not to be given appointment of responsibility. Who cares about judicial commission report. No past record of winning any tournament. No inquiry why captain's direction to three stooges ignored and both waqar as well as Intikhab then coach and manager did anything about it. Instead Afridi made captain just few days before world cup. Row with captain. We have to bet on failures.

How can one say such misleading statements " he just reaped the fruits of waqar's efforts"....on what grounds ? what logic ? what were the results during Waqar's tenure ? Why we look at what we THINK about someone instead of numbers ? why we still think Umar Amin is good, deserving even after having failed in ALL outings and extended runs he has been given ? why our pepople still love Wahab Riaz ? we even seem to have Kakmal fans ? WHY ? can we see basic numbers and stats ? PCB needs a decent statistician based on whose results selection committees should be made to drop consistent failures like kakmal, Malik, Riaz, Umar Amin....Anyway having vented out my frustration, Waqar Younus is still a good choice, although criticizing Mohsin Khan without solid support of numbers is a bit too harsh.

Its appalling how Zaheer and Intikhab have tried to justify Waqar's selection. Zaheer should know that in an interview you don't just try to find out about a person. More importantly you try to gauge who has a better strategy to take Pakistan forward. Intikhab said that the other factors considered were the applicant's ability to take players along with him. Well, we all know how Waqar took Shahid along with him and how poorly the team performed and acted on its 2010 tour to England. I think the PCB should not have responded to Mohsin Khan. By responding they have proved that they cannot justify Waqar's selection.

Mousing is right. It's not about who is better. It's that proper procedure wasn't followed.

Waqar is not a best choice as a head coach - he should bowling coach. Mustaq Ahmed should be head coach after wealth of knowledge and experience with ECB. PCB has to develop players and work with them. Otherwise Saeed Anwar as batting coach.... Zaheer himself failed as team manager, didn't see any improvement in batting.

Both are good but Waqar is a better choice for the job , for a change a right choice.

mohsin khan was the best option

  • Dummy4 on May 10, 2014, 7:14 GMT

I think mohsin should go back to making movies. The guy had left cricket for many many years, he came back due to his contacts.. And being a couch for a short period after waqar, he just reaped the fruits of waqar's efforts..

He shouldn't be personal on this because on any grounds waqar is a better option..
