Petersen granted extension to present fixing charges

Alviro Petersen has until December 9 to respond to charges relating to match-fixing during the South African domestic T20 competition in 2015.

Petersen was charged by Cricket South Africa on November 12 and was initially given 14 days to respond. But his lawyer, Robin Twaddle, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that an extension has been granted..

While Twaddle hasn't given any indication of what Petersen's response will be, a statement from the opening batsman after the charges were made public indicated that he will fight them.

On November 13 , Petersen said he had rejected a CSA plea-bargain and would welcome a tribunal instead. Twaddle could not confirm whether this was still Petersen's position.

In March, following Gulam Bodi's 20-year ban for contriving to fix matches during the competition, Petersen confirmed reporting fixing approaches, but said he did not consider himself under investigation. He maintained that the ACSU were aware of his discussions and meetings with other players.

He has since confirmed "playing along," with those involved in the match-fixing scandal, which includes Thami Tsolekile, Jean Symes, Ethy Mbhalati and Pumelela Matshikwe, who were all banned for between seven and 12 years for their involvement. Petersen claims to know of at least one other player who has not been charged.

Petersen has been provisionally suspended from all cricket activities till the matter is pending. That has left his franchise, the Lions, without one of their senior-most batsmen. They have acquired Omphile Ramela from the Cobras on loan to bolster their squad.
