Cricketers not contracted with Sri Lanka Cricket will no longer be allowed to use the board's facilities, including medical assistance, the board's executive committee has decided. SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga confirmed these details to ESPNcricinfo.
The decision has so far met with a positive response. "I believe it's fair enough," Ken de Alwis, the spokesman of the Sri Lanka Cricketers Association told Daily Mirror. "If a player signs a contract, then he becomes an employee of SLC. But if a player does not sign it, then SLC has no obligation to look after his interests."
The SLC will submit the contract proposals to the association.
Fast bowler Lasith Malinga didn't sign an SLC contract last year but received medical assistance from the board when he returned to Sri Lanka briefly for treatment during the current IPL season, in which he's representing Mumbai Indians. Malinga plays for Sri Lanka in limited-overs internationals but has retired from Test cricket. Nishantha Ranatunga, at the time of Malinga's treatment, had said: "Though he has no central contract, it is the SLC's duty to look after the national players." The latest proposal by the SLC, though, suggests a chance of stance.

Posted by Sakthiivel on (May 23, 2012, 12:08 GMT)First pay the salary then only SLC should talk about beneficiaries, BTW malinga is not getting peanuts in MI, his salary is much high than what SLC gives, So he need not to worry abt this.
Posted by Laka_Kandy on (May 23, 2012, 7:20 GMT)SL board should do what WI board did to C H G we can play without Malinga who play only for money yes players has right to play for money but it doesn't mean tha who can forget responsible of national duties
Posted by Udendra on (May 23, 2012, 4:35 GMT)why can't Mumbai Indians pay for Malinga's treatment?
Posted byhide your pride, you mess around , restrict malinga with laws, we will lose him as well at the moment we cant afford to do that.
Posted by SLGirl on (May 22, 2012, 14:37 GMT)Fair. This will ensure cricketers play for the country. But at the same time some cluase should be to protect the player so that SLC cannot revoke contracts any they wanted to. If SLC going this path and treating players as employees, then, there should be assistance to players who got injured at the job. SLC should not cancel player contract when they got injured playing a game. Good example is Malinga which SLC cancel his contract back some years ago. SLC is doing the right thing but the intentions are not what they say.
Posted by Glabbs on (May 22, 2012, 12:19 GMT)Fair enough. Also the board should not earn a commission from IPL for non contracted Sri Lanka players who play in the league.
Posted by Makkered on (May 22, 2012, 10:27 GMT)I have serious reservation on this stance, What is the security for young budding players. No one will come to join cricket. If they will know that a small injury is enough to spoil you career. And there is no assistance.
Posted by Sulaimaan91 on (May 22, 2012, 8:38 GMT)its change of stance not chance of stance.Anyway a good move and a fair one, it would act as a detriment to younger players from going freelance.
