Heavy rain frustrated Durham's hopes of forcing the victory they need to ease First Division relegation fears.
Only 16 overs were possible on the third day at Taunton where Somerset resumed on 58-0 in reply to the visitors' 378.
The start was delayed until 4.45pm, by which time the game already looked doomed to a draw. But there were bonus points to play for and Durham moved close to a fifth one by removing both overnight batsmen.

Surrey middle order evaporates against Derbyshire

Derbyshire began the second morning better than they had the first with Tim Munton taking the wicket of the dangerous Nadeem Shahid almost immediately after the start, Hollioake and Salisbury though built a useful partnership of 54 with Salisbury taking things steadily as his captain lay about the bowling, taking the chances and was the first to be out, caught by Di Venuto from the bowling of Dean, having scored a busy 42 from just thirty four balls in aggressive style, but probably inappropriate haste as his partner took most of the bowling.
Salisbury sought to accelerate after that with his night watchman's job well and truly done having survived over an hour into the new day he was bowled trying a forcing shot through the off side from a good well pitched up delivery shortly after he had pulled the same bowler delightfully to the square leg boundary. Ali Brown took up the gauntlet at this point striking the ball cleanly and hard until with the score on 247 for 5 Derbyshire's Dean thought he had got Ali Brown caught behind when there was a sound as the ball passed the batsman, it wasn't of bat on ball however and both umpire and batsman remained unmoving he was only to score one more run after that.
Gary Butcher took a while to get off the mark having one cover drive blocked by a brilliant diving stop before he got another away slashed high and wide of point to bring up the home side's second batting point. Around this time, with the Derbyshire bowlers having taken some wickets and sensing the chance to dismiss Surrey for a total short of the three hundred mark, Dean excepted, they produced some erratic deliveries as they bent their backs. Ali Brown, frustrated, fell to a good leaping catch by the tall opener Stubbings - again from Dean's bowling as he failed to clear square leg with a square drive clipped lazily upwards off the middle of his bat towards the boundary on the Lake and Lock side of the ground.

Surrey beat Derbyshire by an innings

After their poor batting performance of the morning Surrey's nerves were set jangling further by a good opening stand between Stubbings and Sutton - who was standing in for Lacey

After their poor batting performance of the morning Surrey's nerves were set jangling further by a good opening stand between Stubbings and Sutton - who was standing in for Lacey. Both players did well to keep out Bicknell while scoring rapidly at the other end. Gary Butcher was introduced to the attack to try for five in five, he too was unable to break the partnership though and Derbyshire seemed on the verge of playing their way back into a game they had been comprehensively played out of on the first day..... Until Salisbury joined the fray around a quarter past three to deliver the twentieth over of the innings. At that time the score stood at 65 for 0 and a further three runs came from the first part of his over, one hour, thirteen and a half overs and twenty-nine runs later it was all over.
Shahid and Hollioake's close catching combined once again with another demostration of wonderful spin bowling and some baffled and terrified batting to wipe out a second innings, Saqlain - who's figures stood at 2-0-5-0 when his partner in crime joined him in the attack took a devastating seven for six in the next seven and a half overs while at the other end Salisbury, who's turn it was to have less luck with the edge bagged 3-25.
Dowman sought, for a brief time successfully, to survive and Munton, taking an intelligent view of his long term survival prospects, swung the bat gamely for thirteen runs, entertaining in classic tailenders fashion before offering a dolly caught and bowled to Saqlain but the rest of the team faded away so fast that it might have made some of their hosts feel undeservedly better about the morning's batting effort.

Mike Smethurst and Peter Martin hit back for Lancashire after Kent's Martin Saggers had plunged them into trouble as bowlers dominated the first day at Old Trafford.
Lancashire looked set for a big score on a good pitch after John Crawley won the toss, chose to bat and steered them to 94 for one.But they then slumped to 236 all out with Saggers claiming four for 54 and Min Patel picking up three wickets, although many of the Lancashire batsmen had only themselves to blame.
They were rescued, not for the first time this season, by their bowlers. Martin, playing his first Championship match since breaking his thumb on May 31, had Rob Key lbw and David Fulton caught at second slip by Andy Flintoff.

Somerset and Durham were frustrated by the rain as only one session of play was possible on the second day of the County Championship first division match at Taunton.
Torrential rain during and just after the lunch interval flooded the outfield and forced umpires Barry Dudleston and Bob White to abandon play just after 4pm.
Both sides are looking for a win to ease their relegation fears, but it will be difficult to fashion a psoitive result from here on.

England bowlers dominate opening morning

A rampant England team shattered the West Indian top-order batting in a superb performance in the field on the first morning of the crucial Fourth Test at Headingley

A rampant England team shattered the West Indian top-order batting in a superb performance in the field on the first morning of the crucial Fourth Test at Headingley. The top five in the list, Brian Lara and all, were bundled back to the pavilion with only 60 runs on the board, and at the interval England were still on top with the West Indian total 83 for five.
Campbell appeared positive and Griffith edgy as West Indies went in to bat; the positive one was first to go, however, driving overenthusiastically at a swinging ball from Gough and slicing a neck-high catch straight to Trescothick in the gully. West Indies were 11 for one, Campbell 8.
Caddick beat the bat frequently, but perhaps pitched a little too short to take wickets; Gough was more expensive but more dangerous, although he did not break through again. Hinds had made 16 when he drove at a ball from White that moved in, found the gate and apparently the inside edge, and was caught by wicketkeeper Stewart, the latter's 150th Test catch behind the stumps. West Indies were 50 for two.

Darren Cousins and Paul Taylor bowled second division leaders Northamptonshire to the brink of a fourth successive Championship win after a dismal batting collapse by Sussex at Eastbourne.
Chasing 228 to win, Sussex collapsed to 45-7 when bad light stopped play after Northants had bowled five overs after claiming the extra half hour. Cousins took four wickets in 13 balls, removing Richard Montgomerie for the fourth time in six days, Toby Peirce, Wasim Khan and Tony Cottey as Sussex slumped to 6-4.
Taylor chipped in with the wickets of Robin Martin-Jenkins, James Kirtley and Umer Rashid to leave the home side on 25-7, but skipper Chris Adams and Nick Wilton at least delayed the inevitable defeat until the third day.
