Pakistan right-arm leg-spinner Danish Kenaria destroyed Australia's batting with figures of five wickets for 17 runs off 10 overs to give Pakistan victory by four wickets at the R. Premadasa Stadium Thursday.
Put into bat on a slow pitch, Australia were shot out for 113 in the 40th over after struggling throughout against the pace of left-armer Sahid Saeed and the spin of Kenaria. Saeed struck two early blows to finish with figures of 3 for 13 off 10 overs. Top scorer was Shane Watson who made a solid 27 off 63 balls.
Australia fought back hard to reduce Pakistan to 68 for 6 in the 33rd over, before an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 45 off 41 balls between Humayun Farhat and Yasir Arafat saw them home in the 40th over. Wicket-keeper Humayun who accounted for three dismissals in the Australian innings, rescued Pakistan from a tight situation with a run-a-ball knock of 38 not out which included six fours. He took the game away from Australia in the 38th over when he slammed three fours off Michael Clarke to carry Pakistan past the 100-run mark. Having overcome that psychological barrier, Pakistan cruised home with Humayun making the winning hit by straight driving Shane Watson to the boundary.
This was Pakistan's second successive win in the Super League following their defeat of New Zealand on Tuesday. They meet West Indies in their final game on Saturday.

West Indies expose New Zealand's batting

The West Indies beat New Zealand by 56 runs at the NCC ground in Colombo

The West Indies beat New Zealand by 56 runs at the NCC ground in Colombo. Replying to the Caribbean side's 218 for 6, the Kiwis collapsed to 162 all out in the 44th over. Nondescripts has proved to be a happy hunting ground for the West Indians, this victory win keeping their hopes of a semi final place very much alive.
The West Indies won the toss and elected to bat on a dry pitch. Lopez, employed in the pinch hitting role got the innings off to a positive start. His cameo of 22 set the pace. New Zealand did not appear fazed and responded with early wickets. Zaheer Ali fell LBW to his first delivery, then the studless Deonarine run out flat on his back for 9. Brenton Parchment was the anchor of the West Indian innings, driving and cutting with his usual flourish, finishing with 54 important runs. At 167 for 8, the game was there to be taken by New Zealand but they chose not to bring back their strike bowlers before it was too late. Camillus Alexander and Andrew Richardson were allowed easy runs and went on to share an unbeaten stand of 51 for the ninth wicket in 11 overs helping the West Indian total onto a respectable 218 for 8 from their allocated 50 overs.
New Zealand produced a lacklustre reply against a well balanced pace and spin bowling attack. Hungry for success, Fast bowler Andrew Richardson made early inroads. Into his rhythm and with legs pumping he got Leighton Morgan to knick the 2nd ball of the innings to Francois behind the stumps. A well timed catch by Lopez removed Horsley and Richardson promptly dealt with How just as he had Morgan previously.
At 44 for 3 in the twelfth over, New Zealand were on the back foot and never recovered. Spinners Samuels, Hinds and Alexander made good use of a turning wicket and strangled the Kiwi middle and lower order. When Shaw was finally run out in the 44th over, New Zealand were 56 runs in arrears of the West Indian target. The West Indies triumph, it must be said came with an inept display of batting characterized by too many unforced errors.

East Zone race to incredible victory

Chasing a victory target of 306 and winning with almost ten overs to spare

Chasing a victory target of 306 and winning with almost ten overs to spare. That's the incredible feat that East Zone pulled off on the opening day of the Deodhar Trophy tournament at Baroda on Wednesday. When favourites Central Zone led off with 305 for seven in 50 overs, few would have given East Zone a chance of winning. But an unbeaten fourth wicket partnership of 175 runs between opener Nikhil Haldipur and Saba Karim, both of whom got breezy hundreds, saw East Zone race to victory for the loss of only three wickets and with 9.5 overs to spare.
The batsmen had things their own way from start to finish. The fact that 614 runs were scored off 90.1 overs, with three hundreds being notched up while only 10 wickets fell illustrates the dominance of the bat over ball. The knocks by Karim and Haldipur, their hectic partnership and East Zone's remarkable victory put into the shade the superb century of Jai P Yadav in the morning.
Opting to bat, Central lost the in form Jyoti Yadav quickly when he was bowled by Zaman for eight. But Gagan Khoda and Jai P Yadav steadied the innings with a second wicket partnership of 99 runs off 18.3 overs. Khoda was content to play second fiddle as Yadav blazed forth with bold strokes. After Khoda's departure for 40, Yadav and Amay Khurasia then maintained the momentum with a third wicket stand of 110 runs off 18.1 overs. Again Yadav dominated the partnership and was well past his hundred when Khurasia gave a return catch to Utpal Chatterjee for 39. The veteran Bengal left arm spinner then dismissed Yadav in his next over. Yadav's brilliant 128 was compiled off just 117 balls and he hit 17 fours and two sixes.
The sparkle was maintained by a bright 45 by D Bundela. He faced only 27 balls and hit two fours and three sixes. With skipper Gyanendra Pandey, he gave the innings a final flourish by adding 46 runs for the sixth wicket off only five overs. The East Zone skipper Chatterjee was the one bowler to stand up to the punishment and was rewarded with four for 53 off ten overs.

Zimbabwe bounced back from the disappointment of losing to England by just three runs with an emphatic six-wicket victory over Kenya at the Galle Stadium today. In bright sunshine and on a good batting wicket, they bowled out the Kenyans for just 162 in 44.2 overs, reaching the target with 18.2 overs remaining.
Speaking after the match to CRICINFO, the Zimbabwean manager was happy to get a win but not particularly happy with their performance in the field. ``It is good to get a win under our belt. I?m happy with the result but not particularly happy with the bowling today, which is one area in which we have been very good at. We bowled far too many extras again and went through spells where we lost our concentration. I think they ended up with 40 too many. On the other hand that is about the best we have batted all tour. We have just got to get all three departments right together.''
Zimbabwe now have to beat Namibia on Friday to be sure of qualifying for the Plate semi-finals but will be desperate to beat Bangladesh as well. If they win the group then they don?t have to play South Africa in the semi-final.
The Kenyans will be crestfallen. They came to this tournament with high hopes but have so far not really performed. Even their fielding , which is normally so electric, was bit rugged today. They have clearly suffered from the lack of match practice in the run up to the tournament.
