A strong rearguard action saw Uttar Pradesh recover to score 303 for
nine wickets declared on the second day of their Central Zone Vijay
Merchant Trophy (under-16) match against Rajasthan at Bhilwara on
Saturday.
UP, resuming at 172 for five, lost their sixth wicket without any
addition to the score. A seventh wicket fell at 190. Then the recovery
process was initiated by the No 8 batsman S Upadhya. First with No 9 N
Chowdhury (14) he added 58 runs for the eighth wicket and then with No
10 N Trivedi (19) he put on 55 runs for the ninth wicket. At the
declaration, Upadhya was unbeaten with 79 after batting almost 3-1/2
hours. He faced 126 balls and hit eight fours.
Rajasthan were given a good start by openers A Mann (32) and R Gurjar
(48 not out) who put on 81 runs in 36.2 overs. Sarthak Shukla however
took two wickets in successive overs and Rajasthan at stumps were 87
for two.

Vidarbha, by stumps on the second day, took a stranglehold on their
Vijay Merchant Trophy (under-16) match against Madhya Pradesh at
Nagpur on Saturday.
Resuming at 83 without loss in reply to MP's first innings total of
135, Vidarbha were all out for 322. Openers Faiz Fazal (50) and Ali
Akbar (69) put on 103 runs and valuable contributions down the order
and 38 extras boosted the Vidarbha lead to 187 runs. They then grabbed
a quick wicket in the MP second innings and the visitors were 23 for
one wicket at close.

AS Srivatstava and Maninder Singh led a strong rearguard action as
Madhya Pradesh recovered after a poor start to score 264 for eight at
close of play of their Cooch Behar Trophy semifinal against Punjab at
the Telco club ground in Jamshedpur on Sunday.
MP lost five wickets cheaply before Srivatsava and Maninder did a major
repair job. Srivastava scored 101 before he was leg before to Yuvraj
Singh. Srivastava batted 215 minutes, faced 165 balls and hit 17 fours.
Maninder's patient 57 was compiled in 227 minutes. He faced 192 balls
and hit eight of them to the ropes. A Uniyal and Yuvraj Singh took
three wickets each.

Holders Central Zone, in the face of of an imposing North Zone total
of 543, were struggling at 149 for three from 73 overs when rain
stopped play shortly after tea on the third day of their Duleep Trophy
semifinal at Guwahati on Saturday.
Resuming at 24 for one, Central lost Abbas Ali (31) who dominated the
second wicket partnership of 48 off 18 overs with Jyoti Yadav. Manoj
Mudgal (27) and Jyoti Yadav then added 63 runs for the third wicket
off 40 overs. And shortly before the rain came down, Yadav and R Ali
(25) had increased the score by 38 runs during an unbroken fourth
wicket association that has lasted 14.4 overs. At the truncated end,
Yadav who had opened the batting on Friday evening, had faced 195
balls for his unbeaten 58, hitting five fours.

West Zone were heading towards a big first innings lead at stumps on
the third day of their Duleep Trophy semifinal against East Zone at
Calcutta on Saturday. In reply to West Zone's first innings total of
600 for eight declared, East Zone were a shaky 208 for five wickets at
close of play.
West Zone, who resumed at 544 for seven, declared their innings after
scoring 56 more runs in eleven overs. The eighth wicket stand between
IR Siddiqui and BN Mehta put on 46 runs before Siddiqui was out for 42
while at the declaration, Mehta remained unbeaten with 24.
Openers SS Das and Nikhil Haldipur gave East Zone a sound start
putting on 83 runs off 28.5 overs. Das was then run out for 30. In the
next over East Zone suffered a major blow when the in form Rohan
Gavaskar was leg before to Z Khan. The home team suffered a severe
setback when Haldipur was also run out for 59 at 110. Haldipur, who
was shaping well, faced 106 balls and hit 12 fours. Mhambrey dismissed
Parida for 14 while T Rehman was leg before to BN Mehta for 4 and by
now the East Zone innings, at 155 for five, was in shambles. However
experienced Saba Karim stood firm and by close of play he was batting
with 60. The India stumper faced 112 balls, hit eleven fours and
received able support from Sukhbinder Singh (23) with whom he shared
an unbroken sixth wicket partnership of 53 runs in 19.4 overs by
stumps.

Hurdles keep confronting them and yet Australia's cricketers continue
their eminently successful negotiation of most obstacles in their
contemporary Test cricketing path. That is again the bottom line after
another uncompromising six hours of cricket from the home team on day
two of the First Test left India 123 for four in response to their 441
by stumps here at the Adelaide Oval today.
In essence, this was a day when two of Test cricket's key defining
ingredients - namely, steely competitiveness and the ability of the
game's great players to rise effortlessly to the top - were in
abundance.
After medium pacer Ajit Agarkar (2/86) had revived India's flickering
hopes of dismissing the Australians for a modest first innings total
by sensationally claiming the wicket of Adam Gilchrist (0) with the
very first ball of the day's play, it was Steve Waugh (150) and Shane
Warne (86) who were the first to underscore these principles when the
action began.
Although they were tested by some accurate bowling at the outset and
were not always in command, the pair at first resisted the Indians'
best attempts to launch a decisive wicket taking burst before
unleashing a withering assault.

This is the last real game before the West Indies meet New Zealand in the first of two Tests, the last Tests for both teams for this year. This game is of extreme importance to give an indication as to how organized the West Indies cricket team is at this moment.
The selections that Brian Lara had for this game suggested that, except for the absence of almost certainties for the Test, fast bowlers Merve Dillon and Courtney Walsh, at least two, maybe as many as four of the West Indian players, were on trial.
Darren Ganga has shown little since coming to international cricket. Surprisingly, he was given the nod over Adrian Griffith to open the batting in this last warm-up game with another Test certainty, Sherwin Campbell.
In next to no time, Ganga, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who, for no reason at all, was batting at No. 3 instead of Brian Lara, Lara himself and Ricardo Powell, perhaps another on trial, were out, West Indies 61-4.

Natal enjoyed the benefits of winning a very good toss as their
pacemen reduced Eastern Province to 239 for nine on the first day of
their SuperSport Series match at Kingsmead on Friday.
And but for a very lethargic middle session and the perpetual problem
of bad light cutting 15.1 overs off the day's play despite the use of
floodlights, the Natal innings could have been well under way.
Natal won the toss and predictably sent Eastern Province in to bat in
overcast conditions, which were exploited by their pacemen to the
extent that the visitors went into lunch on 78 for four.
But the home side rather let things slide between lunch and tea,
failing to push home their advantage as EP rallied to 166 for
five. James Bryant, their leading batsman this season, and Murray
Creed were at the forefront, each scoring half-centuries in largely
untroubled fashion.

Openers Ashraf Ali (42) and SK Shukla (56) batted for 29.5 overs but
the batsmen who followed struggled for runs chiefly against P Singh

Vidarbha were in a position of considerable strength at stumps on the
opening day of their Central Zone Vijay Merchant Trophy (under-16)
match against Madhya Pradesh at Nagpur on Friday. After dismissing MP
for 135 runs, Vidarbha scored 83 without loss from 23 overs at close
of play.
Electing to bat, MP lost wickets at regular intervals and it was only
a valuable 31 by the No 8 batsman Amit Rajak which helped MP to get to
three figures. Chandrasekhar Atram and Azhar Sheikh took three wickets
each. By close of play, openers Fazal (20) and Akbar (57) had seen
Vidarbha get off to a fine start. The more aggressive Akbar faced 74
balls and hit eleven fours.
