Madhya Pradesh translated their overwhelming superiority over
Saurashtra into an outright victory by 218 runs to enter the semifinal
of the Cooch Behar Trophy at Jamshedpur on Friday.
Already virtually assured of a berth into the penultimate round at
close of play on Thursday, MP did not relax but pressed for a
win. Resuming their second innings at 249 for nine, they were all out
for 262 on the final morning. The tenth wicket stand between No 10 AN
Sharma and No 11 Ashok Sharma was worth 50 runs. Dhruv took the last
wicket to finish with seven for 76 off 42 overs.
Set a virtually impossible victory target of 395 runs Saurashtra were
dismissed for 216 in 60.5 overs. Only MJ Mehta (48) and skipper US
Karavadra (46) showed some semblance of a fight. M Mishra (5 for 21)
and Ashok Sharma (4 for 43) caused the damage.

Delhi are virtually through to the semifinals of the Cooch Behar
Trophy tournament. At Jamshedpur at the end of the second day's
play on Thursday, they were in an unassailable
position against Gujarat.
Delhi, who were 97 for two at stumps on the first day in reply
to Gujarat's first innings total of 169 batted the whole day
in running up a score of 341 for eight off 131 overs. P. Chawla
(125) and opener D Mohan (80) added 121 runs for the third
wicket. Then Chawla and skipper R gupta (36) put on 99 runs
for the fourth wicket. Mohan faced 201 balls and hit ten fours
while Chawla faced 236 balls and hit 18 of them to the ropes.

Predictably enough, Delhi entered the semifinals of the Cooch Behar
Trophy at Jamshedpur on Friday. They were already in a commanding
position at stumps on the second day and the only interest was whether
they would translate their superiority into an outright
victory. However Gujarat put up an improved show in their second
innings and made sure that Delhi would qualify for the penultimate
round only on their first innings lead of 207 runs.
Resuming at 341 for eight, Delhi were all out for 376 in their first
innings. KD Desai finished with six wickets for 107 runs from 46.5
overs. In their second innings, Gujarat lost half the side for 92 runs
but a sixth wicket stand of 56 runs between KD Desai (57, 104 balls,
eight fours) and BD Thaker (29 not out) helped them reach 185 for
seven when stumps were finally drawn. AK Suman and Suhail Sharma took
three wickets each.

The strong North Zone batting line up turned on the heat early
in their Duleep Trophy semifinal against holders Central Zone
at Guwahati on Thursday. At stumps on the opening day of the
five day match, North Zone had scored 302 for five off 90 overs.
North Zone skipper Vikram Rathour won a good toss and then he
and fellow opener Ashu Dani wasted no time in getting their
side off to a good start by putting on 98 runs in 19.4 overs.
Ashu Dani, who was the dominant partner, was the first to
leave, caught by Mudgal off Bangar for 53. He faced just 55
balls and hit eight fours.
Rathour and Reetinder Singh Sodhi then kept up the pressure
on Central Zone by adding 73 runs for the second wicket off
23.5 overs. Rathour was then caught by Jyoti Yadav off Hirwani
for 70. The Punjab batsman faced 131 balls and hit eight fours.
The dismissal of Rathour did not bring any respite for Central
Zone for Sodhi and Dharmani then got together for a third
wicket stand that added 89 runs off 27.5 overs. Then Sodhi
after making 88 was caught by Mudgal off Hirwani. He faced
152 balls and hit eleven fours and a six. Shortly afterwards
Hirwani took his third straight wicket when he had Dharmani
caught by Gandhe for 52. The in form Dharmani faced 135 balls
and hit five of them to the ropes. Virendra Shewag who hit a
double century in the previous game against South Zone did
not last long and was bowled by Gandhe for 10. Rajiv Nayyar
(13) and Dinesh Mongia (2) were together at stumps. Hirwani,
the 31-year-old former Indian leg spinner was the only bowler
to make an impression and was rewarded with three wickets for
71 runs from 25 overs.

Some determined batting by Gujarat in their second innings prevented
Mumbai from scoring an outright victory in their West Zone Vijay
Merchant Trophy (under-16) match which concluded in Ahmedabad on
Wednesday.
Mumbai were in a position of considerable strength at stumps on the
second day, having taken a first innings lead of 121 runs and then
scoring 61 for one in their second innings. Going for quick runs on
the final morning they declared at 170 for seven, leaving Gujarat the
task of getting 292 for victory. Gujarat, with valuable contributions
from Parthiv Patel (57 not out off 181 balls) and VS Dave (41 off 102
balls) ended at 132 for two off 65 overs.

against Karnataka which concluded at Secundarabad on Wednesday.
Resuming on the final morning with a first innings lead of 54 runs,
Hyderabad declared their second innings at 208 for seven in 68
overs. AT Rayudu top scored with 64 off 102 balls with six fours and a
six while Samiullah Khan came up with a bright unbeaten 54 off 70
balls with eight fours and a six. Left to get 263 runs for victory,
Karnataka were 116 for five at close.

Andhra made a gallant bid to register an outright victory in their
South Zone Vijay Merchant Trophy (under-16) match against Kerala which
concluded at Calicut on Wednesday. But the home team thwarted the
victory bid by some defiant batting.
Resuming at 259 for five, Andhra were all out for 286 to obtain a
first innings lead of 88 runs. Opener Srinivasa Rao, 97 overnight,
duly completed his century and was last out for 113. He batted 385
minutes, faced 291 balls and hit 12 fours. Opening bowler NJ John was
the most successful bowler with five for 81. Kerala lost three wickets
in wiping off the deficit but the batsmen generally held firm even as
Sri Vardha was taking wickets at regular intervals. When stumps were
finally drawn, Kerala were 148 for eight off 81 overs with Sri Vardha
finishing with five for 56 off 26 overs.

Tamil Nadu did not take very long to wrap up their South Zone Vijay
Merchant Trophy (under-16) match against Goa in Chennai on
Wednesday. Goa, who were 13 runs behind on the first innings were 83
for eight at stumps on the second day. They were all out for 88 on the
final morning. Sivakumar finished with the excellent figures of
5-2-5-3 while Arun, Varun and Kumaran took two wickets each. Requiring
only 76 runs for victory, Tamil Nadu coasted to victory losing three
wickets with skipper Adityaa Srikkanth who top scored in the first
innings with 74, hastening the end by hitting an unbeaten 21 off just
ten balls with a six and a four.

A keen battle for the first innings lead highlighted the three day
East zone Vijay Merchant (under-16) Trophy game between Assam and
Bihar which concluded at Maligaon on Wednesday. Ultimately the last
pair carried Bihar to a narrow lead of nine runs and first innings
points.
Put in to bat, Assam scored 345, thanks in the main to Souvik Das'
108. Coming in at No 7, he helped Assam recover from a bad start (119
for five). With Mrigen Talukdar (91 off 108 balls with eleven fours
and two sixes) he put on 110 runs for the sixth wicket off 30.3
overs. Then with Khanin Saikia (30) he added 106 runs for the eighth
wicket. Souvik who was ninth out at 344, batted three hours, faced 138
balls and hit nine fours. Ambuj Kumar was the most successful bowler
with four for 56.
Bihar in contrast, made a good start with Manish Vardhan and Prabhat
Kumar (61) putting on 164 runs for the second wicket off 54
overs. Then Manish and Atul Priyanka (27) consolidated the position
with a third wicket stand of 71 runs off 38.5 overs. Manish Vardhan
who was fourth out for 159, batted 379 minutes, faced 323 balls and
hit 22 fours. Bihar however suffered a middle order collapse and from
272 for two they slumped to 293 for eight. Sanjeev Rajan (14) and
Ranjan Kumar Singh (27) then put on 29 runs for the ninth wicket and
then finally Ranjan Kumar Singh and Ambuj Kumar (20) added 32 runs for
the last wicket off 9.5 overs to take Bihar past the Assam
total. Assam, in their second innings, were 49 for one wicket when
stumps were finally drawn.

Ajay Lalcheta played a stellar role in Saurashtra taking the first
innings points against Maharashtra in their West Zone Vijay Merchant
(under-16) Trophy game which concluded in Pune on Wednesday.
Lalcheta took five wickets for 63 from 47 overs as Maharashtra were
dismissed for 258 in reply to Saurashtra's first innings total of
366. He broke the fifth wicket partnership between Yogesh Takavale and
Parag More which was assuming threatening proportions. Coming together
on the second evening with the score 61 for four, the two carried
stayed on till 242 when Lalcheta had Takawale caught by Goswami for
74. The partnership had put on 181 runs from 98 overs. Takawale faced
292 balls and hit nine fours. Once this stand was broken there was a
sharp collapse and the last six wickets fell for the addition of only
16 runs in 19.3 overs. Among those who fell was More who faced 317
balls for his 81 hitting ten fours. Saurashtra in their second innings
were 61 for three at final draw of stumps.
