News of tournaments involving non-Test teams
The communication problems which typically plague African
cricket at the non-Test level look set to delay the
finalisation of February's Africa Cricket Association Cup
line-up.
While nine countries - the host Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania,
South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and
Nigeria have confirmed their involvement - there is
confusion surrounding the participation of West African
nations.
Ghana Cricket Association official, Mr. David Quagraine,
said he understood that West Africa would be sending a
composite team for the event, which is due to be held on
February 18-28.
South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya will be sending teams
limited to four First Class players each.
The status of the event has been boosted with Kenyan brewer,
Tusker, providing sponsorship, while broadcaster, Trans
World International, will telecast the tournament.
Meanwhile, six of the top Associate countries are set to
meet in a tournament in Calcutta in March.
A Kenya Cricket Association proposal for an event involving
Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland and Kenya
has received International Cricket Council backing.
Bangladesh was invited but has other commitments.
Originally planned to be held in Kenya, it was shifted to
India o avoid the East African rainy season.
It is understood the ICC is providing funding to ensure the
event takes place.
