Shane Harwood's boom 2007 continued when he rocked New South Wales with six wickets as they fell for 189 on an action-packed first day at the SCG. Last week Harwood was a surprise call-up to make his Twenty20 International debut,
impressing with 1 for 44, and he won more recognition with his best figures, beating the 6 for 51 he took against the Blues in December.
However, Victoria did not take advantage of his gains and slipped to 4 for 65 by stumps. The reply began horribly when they lost 3 for 8, with Doug Bollinger picking up Nick Jewell and Michael Klinger in his first over and Matthew Nicholson accounting for Lloyd Mash. David Hussey, the stand-in captain, settled the situation with an unbeaten 41 - he got a let off when Bollinger dropped a straightforward catch when he was 32 - but he lost Jon Moss to Stuart MacGill 13 runs before the finish.
New South Wales' talented top-order was broken by Harwood, who removed Phil Jaques and Simon Katich by the time the hosts had 20. Katich had won the toss and it was left to Ed Cowan, the opener, to float the innings in a stand of 69 with Dominic Thornely.
Thornely departed to the ball before lunch when Gerard Denton had him caught by Moss and Harwood took care of Aaron O'Brien for 11 while Mick Lewis' inswinger beat Cowan, who hit nine boundaries in his 68. Stuck at 5 for 133, the Blues' hopes relied on Brad Haddin and he mixed resistance with steady collection in an innings of 49 that included five fours and a six. Harwood ended Haddin's display after capturing Beau Casson and he took his haul to a fine 6 for 38 off 16.3 overs by dismissing MacGill.
