5.28pm And with that, the race for qualification in the men's competition is done. Rockets join Invincibles and Superchargers on 20 points, and still have a shot at an automatic place in the final, although their NRR is such that they are unlikely to have much in their own hands on that front.

Next up, we are headed to Old Trafford, where for a few heady moments, Originals and Phoenix must have believed they were contesting a must-win. Now, it's merely pride to play for...

5.24pm And that is the end of that! Joe Root's unflappable composure did the needful while headless chickens were flocking around him. He had a huge slice on luck on 0, but gave nothing back to Fire until he had no choice but to take them on...and with 14 needed from five balls, a six and a four through midwicket broke the remnants of the resistance.

No doubt about the Meerkat Match Hero. Here's Root: "Way too tense for my liking, they pulled it back, this format is difficult to gauge. The majority of the game the wicket played fine. Green's over, I thought I've got to hit a six here... we needed a boundary in the first two balls, I had a good idea of what we was trying to do to protect that long side, and put a couple away. "

4
Green to Hain, FOUR runs

another full toss, belted through the covers! Green loses his composure at the critical juncture, and Hain punishes him, and the other four teams who were relying on a Fire victory!

Two for a tie, three for the outright win. Either way Rockets qualify... two balls left

98
1
Green to Root, 1 run

full toss, Root nailed his pull, but backward square intercepts! Root is livid with himself, as Hain comes back on strike

97
4
Green to Root, FOUR runs

another skippity-yip to the pitch, another blazing pull through deep midwicket! It's almost done now!

96
6
Green to Root, SIX runs

skips down the pitch, belted into the gap at wide long-on! Did we ever doubt Root? Nah... Lusty launching!

A tie would suffice for Rockets to qualify... 13 off five is the relevant target

Payne to Hain, 1 leg bye

tight line into the pads, squeezed down into the crease, Root hurtles through for the run... and Rockets need 14 in the final five balls!

Ordinarily this would be a shot to nothing for Sam Hain, but in the Hundred there's no change of ends coming up... he probably needs to get Root back on strike

94
W
Payne to Willey, OUT

wide line, hacked off the full length, straight to long-on! Rockets are combusting! Willey backs his levers but it's a misfire on the front foot... and suddenly, Fire are edging into the ascendancy!

David Willey c sub (LWP Wells) b Payne 0 (1b 0x4 0x6 1m) SR: 0

David Willey hits a long ball...

93
W
Payne to Stoinis, OUT

goes for the ramp, doesn't get enough on it! Pace off from Payne, and Stoinis's option was the wrong one! Went for finesse when power might have been the better approach. Hull and Meredith converged behind the keeper, and Hull's big mitts do the needful!

Marcus Stoinis c Hull b Payne 1 (2b 0x4 0x6 5m) SR: 50

1
Payne to Root, 1 run

round the wicket, angled into Root's pads, whipped off the legs to square leg... Stoinis back on strike, with licence to free his arms. Root bats through, the rest swing for the hills!

91
2
Payne to Root, 2 runs

slower ball, outside off, on the full length, Root picked it early, and pressed his drive out to deep cover... an easy two with the lack of pace through the stroke

yorker, superbly directed, Root digs it out late and scampers the single to bring up his fifty... a bit more needed yet!

89
1
Meredith to Stoinis, 1 run

full length, into the toes, clipped to the on-side, to bring Root back onto strike... he's been an innocent bystander of late

So, all of a sudden, it's getting spicy. Here's Stoinis

88
W
Meredith to Linde, OUT

clubbed off the toes, but Kellaway clings on at backward square! It was a solid contact from Linde, flicking up and into the full length, it was fast, it was swirling, but he leapt back and across to cling on brilliantly... this one isn't done yet!

George Linde c Kellaway b Meredith 12 (8b 0x4 1x6 7m) SR: 150
87
Meredith to Linde, no run

bouncer, sharp pace! Linde swings across a pull and can't connect. Clocked at 86mph, but it was onto him quicker than that!

86
Meredith to Linde, no run

good wheels, hitting the pitch hard outside off, Linde rocks back to cut but the ball is already gone

Payne to Linde, 2 runs

short, hauled out to deep midwicket, dropped by Green! He had to make ground to his left, and at least he saved the boundary, but you don't see him drop many. He was five yards in from the rope, so had no reason to worry about staying in play!

84
6
Payne to Linde, SIX runs

blam! That changes things! Too full, right in Linde's arc, he gave himself a bit of room, and lifted his drive clean over long-off

83
2
Payne to Linde, 2 runs

into the pitch, dragged out to the leg-side, good running gets two... a big old pocket at wide long-on

82
1b
Payne to Root, 1 bye

reverses his stance, misses out on his reverse-scoop, Root groans, but his manoeuvring confused Bairstow, who couldn't gather

81
1
Payne to Linde, 1 run

short, bottom-edged on a full-blooded swing, gathered down the leg-side by Bairstow as they rush the single

Now then, they need 1.6 per ball from here... a few boundaries can fix that, but does Root seek them or just stay there to the end?
