Rajneesh Gupta
21-Feb-2001
  • It was the 1690th ODI in cricket history.
  • It was New Zealand's 372nd and Pakistan's 486th match.
  • It was the 54th match between these two sides. The record now reads: New Zealand 20, Pakistan 32, tied one and abandoned one.
  • It was the 26th match between these two sides in New Zealand. The record now reads: New Zealand 14, Pakistan 10, tied one and abandoned one.
  • Umpires BF Bowden and EA Watkin officiated in their 18th and 20th match respectively.
  • Daryl Tuffey did what Wasim Akram had done for Pakistan in the previous match that is, capturing a wicket off the first ball of the match when Saeed Anwar yorked himself to a full length ball. Tuffey became only the fourth New Zealander to achieve this rare honour after Richard Hadlee (dismissed India's Sunil Gavaskar at Perth on 09-12-1980), Chris Pringle (dismissed Sri Lanka's Roshan Mahanama at Bloemfontein on 08-12-1994) and Chris Cairns (dismissed West Indies' Sherwin Campbell at Taupo and Napier on 04-01-2000 and 06-01-2000 respectively).
  • Saeed Anwar was out dismissed without scoring for the 13th time in his career. However this was only the third time when he got out off the first ball he faced. The other such occasions being v New Zealand at Auckland on 30-12-1992 and v South Africa at Lahore on 02-11-1997. Anwar, once, was also out without scoring and without facing a ball in the match against Australia at Melbourne on 10-01-1989.
  • The duck was Anwar's fifth in floodlit matches. He now joins Shahid Afridi, Moin Khan and Salim Malik to share the dubious distinction of aggregating most ducks in floodlit matches. Just for the record, two Australians, Steve Waugh and Craig McDermott jointly held the ODI record of most ducks in a career in such matches.
  • The duck was Anwar's 12th as opener. Now only West Indian Desmond Haynes (13) and Sri Lankan Romesh Kaluwitharana (13) have aggregated more ducks in a career in this role.
  • Pakistan's total (135) was its lowest ever against New Zealand in all matches. The previous lowest was 139 at Auckland on 30-12-1993.
  • It was also the second lowest allout total for Pakistan that included an individual fifty (Abdur Razzaq- 50) after the 117 in 41.3 overs (Inzamam-ul-Haq 51*) against West Indies at Kingston on 12-04-2000. Just for the record, the ODI record of lowest total to include a fifty is South Africa's 101 in 26.5 overs (Herschelle Gibbs scored 59*) against Pakistan at Sharjah on 28-03-2000.
  • The catch of Yousuf Youhana was 67th for Stephen Fleming in his 149th match which makes him the fielder with most catches in a career for New Zealand. Fleming went past Martin Crowe's tally of 66 catches from 143 matches.
  • Chris Harris broke Hadlee's New Zealand one-day international record of 158 wickets when he had Shahid Afridi caught by Nathan Astle at point.
  • In finishing with figures of 10 overs two maidens 12 runs and one wicket, Harris recorded the most economical figures by a New Zealander against Pakistan in a match. The previous record was held by Martin Crowe who conceded 14 runs in his 10 overs at Hamilton on 14-03-1989. Harris' figures are also the fourth joint most economical in all New Zealand's ODIs.
