Bermuda pulled off the shock of the ICC World Cricket League Division 1 by defeating
previously-unbeaten Scotland by five wickets at Ruaraka on Monday.
There was perhaps some complacency among the Scots during this final round match as
they were already through to Wednesday's final but this was a fine performance by
the Bermudans who had lost all their previous games in the
tournament.
An unbeaten partnership of 134 for the sixth-wicket between captain Irving Romaine
and hard-hitting batsman Lionel Cann sealed a much-needed victory for Bermuda as
they successfully chased Scotland's total of 268 with five wickets and one over to
spare.
Romaine ended up on 85 while Cann remained unbeaten on 49 in what is a huge
confidence boost for coach Gus Logie and his side as they make their final
preparations for next month's ICC Cricket World Cup in the West Indies.
But Scotland will not worry too much about this defeat. They booked their place in
the final when they defeated host team Kenya on Sunday and it is the same opposition
that they will face on Wednesday at the famous Nairobi Gymkhana ground.
Batting first the Scots made 268, thanks chiefly to a 106-run partnership between
Ryan Watson and Gavin Hamilton.
Watson made 57 before being trapped lbw by Delyone Borden and Hamilton hit a classy
79 before being caught by wicketkeeper Dean Minors off the bowling of Stefan Kelly.
Prior to that, Scotland looked like they might post a big score but Bermuda stuck to
their task well and manage to restrict the remaining Scotland batsmen.
Neil McCallum (20) and Dougie Lockhart (25) got starts but were unable to see their
side home and they were forced to be content with setting Bermuda 269 to win in 50
overs.
Kelly and Saleem Mukuddem took three wickets apiece while Borden chipped in with two.
And for much of the Bermuda innings, it all looked to be going to plan for Craig
Wright's team. Bermuda stuttered to 54 for three and then 135 for five as Wright and
Dougie Brown did the early damage.
But in Romaine and Cann, Bermuda have two very talented cricketers. On their day
they can put bowlers to the sword and today was one of those days.
