Bhuvneshwar, Shami in longest last-wicket stand in England

Vijay's 146 was the seventh instance of an Indian batsman scoring a century during his first match in England. The others are Sourav Ganguly, Vijay Manjrekar, Sandeep Patil, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Abbas Ali Baig and Ajit Agarkar. He faced 361 balls, and only three Indian batsmen have played more balls during an innings in England.

Vijay and MS Dhoni raised the sixth partnership of 100 or more for the fifth wicket by an Indian pair in England. Three of the previous five stands came in losses, while the other two were from drawn Tests.

Dhoni scored 82 runs before being run out, only the fourth time that he was dismissed in that fashion, and the first time outside India. Dhoni now has five half-centuries in England, the most for him in any country outside India. His nine fifties against England are also more than he has against any other Test nation. Dhoni has 15 fifties in away Tests, to go along with 15 fifties at home.

Dhoni recorded his second instance of playing more than 150 balls in an innings outside the subcontinent. The other instance was in England as well, when Dhoni led a rearguard to save the Lord's Test in 2007.

India went from 344 for 5 to 346 for 9, a collapse of four wickets for two runs. England took four for one against Sri Lanka at Headingley in June. There have been 32 instances of teams losing nos. 6 to 9 for a total of zero, one or two runs in Tests.

India were rescued by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami, who surpassed all expectations with a stand of 111, the second-highest partnership for the 10th wicket by any Indian pair.

Bhuvneshwar and Shami faced 229 balls, the most by a final-wicket pair in England and the only instance when a 10th wicket pair had played more than 200 balls at Trent Bridge. They hold India's record for the most balls faced by the final-wicket pair and are fourth-highest overall. It was the second time the last two batsmen have added more than 100 runs at this venue. In terms of balls played, the last three 10th wicket partnerships at Trent Bridge have been the three longest at this ground. Even in terms of runs scored, the the last two Tests at this ground have now seen the two best 10th wicket stands.

Bhuvneshwar and Shami recorded the third instance of Indian batsmen from no.9 or below scoring half-centuries.

In each of the last three years, England have allowed the opposition's 10th wicket to score at least one 100-plus partnership. In the fifteen years before that, England endured this humiliation on only once.

Four England seamers bowled more than 25 overs each for the third successive Test. A feat that has happened only thrice in 99 Tests before that (since 16 May 2006).

Stuart Broad bowled 33 overs for two wickets at an economy rate of 1.60, the third-best economy rate for an English bowler who has bowled more than 25 overs in an innings post 2000. It is the best at Trent Bridge in 33 years since Bob Willis returned figures of 3/47 in 30 overs (economy 1.56) against Australia.

James Anderson was at the other end of the spectrum, conceding 123 runs in 38 overs, only the third time he has conceded 100-plus runs in an innings at Trent Bridge, which is otherwise one of his favourite Test venues. Two have now come against India and these are his two most expensive spells at this venue.

India have made a 400-plus score in the first innings of a Test match against England on 29 previous occasions. Nineteen of them were drawn and nine were won by India. However, England did win on one occasion and maybe they can draw inspiration from that game.
