Andrew Symonds, the Australian allrounder, is worried that his career might stall on two Tests after he missed a spot in the squad for the Ashes tour beginning in July. Symonds played twice against Sri Lanka in 2003-04, scoring 53 runs at 13.25, but has not been recalled as the selectors preferred Brad Hogde as the spare batsman in India and New Zealand, and now England.
A regular face in the one-day side, Symonds is concerned that he may never play another Test. "It's always a fear, but if I retire from the game knowing I've given it my best shot, then that's OK with me," Symonds told ABC Sport. "There's nothing in my career like putting a baggy green on my head, a wonderful moment ... I suppose you yearn for another chance, but I suppose the future will tell us whether that happens or not."
Symonds, who was named Australia's one-day player of the year this season, has scored 2604 runs in 116 ODIs, and has also been useful with the ball, taking 87 wickets at 36.89. Although not in the selectors' thoughts in the longer version of the game, he was picked for the two one-day series in England, which precede the Tests.
