England slump further in rankings

England's credibility as a one-day side took a further blow after their 5-0 thumping to Sri Lanka, dropping to the eighth spot in the latest ICC ODI rankings. This was England's third successive ODI series loss, which cost them a further six points to drop below West Indies .

In contrast, Sri Lanka gained four valuable points to inch closer to India at the fifth spot. Though still at No.6, Sri Lanka have the chance to go up by one notch when they host India and South Africa at home for a tri-series next month.

Sanath Jayasuriya's roaring form helped him gain seven points to move to No.15 in the batting rankings. Jayasuriya scored two centuries, including a destructive 152 off 99 balls in the final ODI at Headingley, denying England a consolation win. His opening partner, Upul Tharanga too made rapid strides, gaining 38 points for topping the overall run aggregate in the series, taking the 44th position. His team-mate Lasith Malinga, who finished the leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets, gained a whopping 77 points to take the 50th spot.

For England, the only player to make an impact on the rankings was Marcus Trescothick, who picked up three points to finish at No.16.
