England v South Africa 1998

At Manchester, May 23

15-Apr-1999
At Manchester, May 23. South Africa won by 32 runs. Toss: England.
In the previous match, Gough had taken a wicket with his second ball after a ten-month lay off from international cricket. Now he claimed four as South Africa were bowled out for 226. It was not a strong total, but would have been far weaker without Klusener, who made 55 not out from 49 balls after he came to the crease at 143 for six.
When England batted, their top scorer again attempted a sharp single to Rhodes and again regretted it. This time it was Stewart, who kept on running back to the pavilion when Boucher flicked off the bails. The TV replay, however, showed that the ball was actually lodged in his armpit at the time; Boucher himself was probably too winded either to appeal or call Stewart back. In any case, Pollock quickly followed up with a perfect in-swinger to remove Hollioake for 46, and the all-rounders packing England's tail failed to live up to their billing. Donald, who bowled with fire and accuracy, finished with three for 32.
Man of the Match: L. Klusener. Attendance: 19,133; receipts £580,932.
