Adam Gilchrist has been named captain of the Australian cricket team for the
Third Test, beginning on Friday 15 December at the Adelaide Oval.
Australian Cricket Board Chairman Denis Rogers, who made the announcement
today in Melbourne, also named Ricky Ponting as vice-captain for the match
against the West Indies.
Gilchrist's appointment makes him Australia's 41st Test captain, and the
first wicketkeeper to fill the role since 1968, when Barry Jarman captained
the side in place of an injured Bill Lawry.
Gilchrist is filling in for Steve Waugh, who will miss the Test due to a
strained buttock muscle.
