Gillespie sidelined for PM V ATSIC match but on track for Ashes selection

Australian fast bowler, Jason Gillespie, has been forced to withdraw from the up-coming PM's XI V ATSIC Chairman's XI game in Canberra after precautionary scans revealed a stress reaction in his left foot. The injury will sideline Gillespie until the beginning of May.

Gillespie's withdrawal from the 19 April match is a major disappointment for the South Australian who had been named captain of the ATSIC Chairman's XI.

"I'm naturally disappointed at having to pull out," Gillespie said. " The game is a terrific initiative to encourage other indigenous Australians to play cricket. I was looking forward to the chance to dismiss Steve Waugh but now one of my team-mates will get that honour," he added.

The ATSIC selectors are currently considering a replacement for Gillespie in the Chairman's team with an announcement expected by Thursday 12 April.

While unable to play in the game, Gillespie will still travel to Canberra to take part in a range of activities surrounding the match.

Despite this setback, Gillespie remains available for selection in the Ashes squad that leaves for England at the end of May.

Australian Team Doctor, Trefor James, says that he is confident Gillespie will be fit to take his place in the squad if selected.

"At this stage the foot injury prevents Jason from playing cricket for all of April. He will be re-examined at the beginning of May at which time I would expect him to start three weeks of land-based fitness activity in preparation for the tour," said Dr James.

"The injury is being properly managed and I am confident that Jason will be fit for the Ashes tour if he is selected."
