Govt within its rights to withdraw Arjuna awards: Uma Bharti

Union Sports Minister Uma Bharti said in Pune on Sunday that government was within its rights to withdraw the Arjuna awards, but will not take any hasty decisions.

The players indicted in CBI match fixing report have been given 15 days time to explain their position and after going through their replies, the government would take appropriate steps, the minister said addressing a sports function at the Nehru stadium.

The Government was consulting the Law Ministry to frame specific rules to deal with the issues of match fixing sternly, Bharti said. A meeting of top sports federation administrators would be convened soon to suggest foolproof measures to check match fixing, the minister added.
