The second day of the Frizzell County Championship match belonged to Hampshire, as the amassed maximum batting points, then captured two late wickets to finish in command.
Simon Katich and Nic Pothas added 46 to their overnight partnership, before the wicket-keeper cut at Plunkett to be caught at third man. Katich playing a patient roll on the slow wicket moved serenely on, whilst Dimitri Mascarenhas began to play some more aggressive shots. Katich finally fell bowled, attempting to cut at the off spinner Phillips. Wasim Akram then made the same mistake with his third ball.
At 332-7 Hampshire appeared to be losing their way, that is until Mascarenhas and Shaun Udal stayed together to bring up the 400 and 5 bonus points. They shared an 8th wicket partnership of 113, before Dimmi played back to Phillips and was lbw eight short of a deserved century.
Udal progressed to 60 not out, before tailenders Mullally and Giddins fell. Hampshire's score of 456 was their highest Innings tally at the Rose Bowl.
Jon Lewis the countries leading run scorer and James Lowe, making his first class debut, gave the visitors a good start posting 79 runs, before Ed Giddings enticed the Durham captain to edge to wicket-keeper Pothas. Gordon Muchall then fell lbw to Udal's quicker ball, to leave Hampshire in the accendancy.
