The International Cricket Council (ICC) has extended the time-limit for Bangladesh to justify its claim for Test status to the next AGM of the games ruling body in 1999. This was disclosed by the president of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP after the executive committee meeting of the ICC at Lords yesterday afternoon.
In this regard, the ICC has formed a three-member committee comprising of Bobby Simpson (Australia), Nasim-ul Ghani (Pakistan) and Andy Pycroft (Zimbabwe). The trio will work out details of Bangladesh's cricket format for the coming season including the introduction of the longer version of the game, and assess the condition of wickets and the standard of umpiring before making the final recommendation.
Bangladesh applied for Test status in May last year with India proposing and Pakistan seconding. But a disappointing tour to New Zealand and non-existence of longer-version of the game largely swayed ICC to the negative. Bangladesh along with Kenya were awarded one-day international (ODI) status last June.
