ICC President Ehsan Mani today sent a message of condolence to the family of Fazal Mahmood.
"I was only nine years old when Fazal Mahmood bowled Pakistan to victory at the Oval but I remember the euphoric reaction to that success in 1954 like it was yesterday," said Mr Mani.
"It was deeds such as the 12 wickets Fazal took in that match which helped inspire my interest in cricket and enthused a new nation to embrace the sport.
"He played a pivotal role in establishing Pakistan as a Test-playing nation and began a tradition of fast bowling that continues today.
"His unerring accuracy and exceptional control of the ball made him a bowler of the highest class. He was a true great of the game and provided a shining example to those that sought to follow in his legendary footsteps.
"Fazal will forever hold a special place in the hearts of the people of Pakistan and cricket followers around the world.
"On behalf of the International Cricket Council I send on our sincerest condolences to Fazal's family at this difficult time. We wish them the strength to cope with this sad loss and assure them that the cricket world is united in mourning the passing of a legend."
