It was a fluent Rahul Dravid century that had thwarted Sri Lanka on the first day, and he was the only Indian specialist batsmen remaining on the second morning. Sri Lanka needed his wicket early, and Chanaka Welegedara delivered by nipping out Dravid in the third over of the day.
Tillakaratne Dilshan was in fine form, and captain Kumar Sangakkara was playing second fiddle to guide Sri Lanka to an ominous 189 for 1. Just as Indian shoulders started to droop, Zaheer Khan struck removing both set batsmen in the space of five runs.
If those two wickets swung the momentum India's way, Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera made sure Sri Lanka didn't let the initiative slip, with a dour unbroken 81-run third-wicket stand.
