KARACHI, June 12: The Executive Council of the Karachi City
Cricket Association (KCCA) met at the National Stadium on
Wednesday evening and unanimously asked the Pakistan Cricket
Board (PCB) to award it two one-dayers of the golden jubilee
cricket tournament.
Prof Sirajul Islam Bukhari said the decision was unanimous. "Our
past record and reputation are excellent. I feel the demand of
the KCCA is quite genuine." Bukhari added that the PCB had
awarded the KCCA three one-day games of the 1996 World Cup. "I
feel proud to say that we had the largest crowd which was the
most disciplined one and unlike the crowd of various other
centres that was violent," Bukhari said. The KCCA Secretary
emphasised that KCCA was the biggest cricket nursery of the
country and deserved two matches.
The PCB has already arranged the four-nation golden jubilee
tournament at Lahore and the itinerary has also been finalised.
South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies are the competing
teams. Prof Bukhari said the Executive Council has also asked
the PCB to fulfil its promise of installing floodlights at the
National Stadium. "Before the World Cup, the PCB had promised
that floodlight facilities would be created at the National
Stadium which would help the city in hosting day and night
matches," he said.
Prof Bukhari stated that the KCCA Council was thankful to the
PCB for allowing permission for holding all-Pakistan golden
jubilee cricket tournament in the city. "The tournament would be
played before the start of the season and hopefully all the
first-class teams would take part," he said. Invitations, he
added, would be dispatched soon while the itinerary will be
released as soon the confirmations from the respective teams is
received.
The Executive Council of the KCCA also accepted the invitation
of playing three one-day matches at Jeddah and Madina. The
matches will be held in the near future, Bukhari said.
The KCCA has also included two new members in its Council.
Zulfiqar Ahmad Sheikh and Irfan Sheikh have been rewarded for
their services for promotion of the game, Bukhari said.
