Division One
Lancashire completed a nerve-jangling one-run win over Nottinghamshire at Old Trafford. The visitors needed six from the final over but could not get past the finishing line. At 102 for 1 - with Stephen Fleming hitting 60 from 62 balls - they were on course to comfortably reach their target of 178, but the middle-order became bogged down as James Anderson took 3 for 18. Lancashire's innings was a stuttering effort after Stuart Law was dismissed for 52.
A century opening stand between Paul Weekes and Ed Smith put Middlesex on course for their three-wicket victory over Worcestershire but it took a rapid 51-run stand from Ed Joyce and Ben Hutton to seal the win. David Leatherdale boosted Worcestershire with an unbeaten 72, after Scott Styris took 3 for 32.
Hampshire were comprehensively outplayed by Northamptonshire as they slumped to a 98-run defeat. Bilal Shafayat set the platform for Northants with 74 from 82 balls and Usman Afzaal chipped in with a brisk half-century. Johann Louw and Ben Phillips then blew the Northants top-order away, reducing them to 92 for 8 and ending the contest.
Division Two
John Francis (73 not out) and Keith Parsons (91 not out) added an unbeaten 157 to steer Somerset to an eight-wicket win against fellow strugglers Leicestershire. Parsons hit five fours and two sixes in his 98-ball innings. Leicestershire did not convert good starts into significant innings - four batsmen falling between 30 and 41.
An unbeaten 122 from Nick Knight propelled Warwickshire towards their 16-run win against Kent in a high-scoring affair at Edgbaston. Knight's 125-ball innings allowed the other batsmen to play their shots, lifting Warwickshire to 279 for 7. While Martin van Jaarsveld (82) and David Fulton (57) were adding 107 for the third wicket Kent were still in the hunt, but Ashley Giles and Heath Streak finished with three wickets apiece.
Yorkshire overcame a top-order slump to record a three-wicket win against Sussex at a bowler-friendly Headingley. Anthony McGrath (37) and Ian Harvey (30) ensured the home side recovered from 66 for 4 in pursuit of 158. Sussex also struggled with the bat, Chris Adams top-scored with 42 from 77 balls, as Richard Dawson and Craig White chipped in with three wickets each.
Scotland suffered a washout in their opening National League match of the season against Durham at The Grange.
