Derek Underwood breaks Australia's resistance

04-Oct-2009

Derek Underwood: "You rarely get a picture with all the players captured in action in one frame. It was a historic Test, and it happened to be the last match of the season. It ended on a dramatic note with just a few minutes to spare. John Inverarity had batted through the innings, having opened for Australia. The wicket did amazingly little: it didn't turn, it didn't bounce. Runs were irrelevant - they needed to make about 340 on that last day - so by having all the players up around the bat, the pressure that was created led to quite a few wickets falling. With three minutes to go Inverarity tried to pad up to one that I bowled straight. We drew the series 1-1. I should think the poor man has nightmares about that still."
