Neil McKenzie boosted made the most of the rain-affected day for the South Africans against Somerset at Taunton. Rain meant play did not start till after lunch, but McKenzie took the initiative as he moved on from his overnight 14 not out to 82 not out as the game meandered into an inevitable draw.
McKenzie hit 12 fours in his innings and boosted his chances of a Test spot against England. Meanwhile Boeta Dippenaar, McKenzie's greatest rival for a middle-order place at Edgbaston next week, was out for 68, caught off Gary Gilder. Graeme Smith then scored a quick 26 not out before declaring on 254 for 4.
Monde Zondeki, Dewalt Pretorius and Charl Willoughby all took a wicket each as Somerset finished the game on 109 for 3 with Wesley Durston and Carl Gazzard the not out batsmen.
