Wavell Hinds, who began his season with a double-century in the first Test at Guyana, has been dropped for the third one-day international in Barbados after mustering a total of eight runs in West Indies' two eight-wicket defeats in Jamaica.
Into his place comes the Leewards Islands firebrand, Runako Morton, whose career appeared to have hit the skids in September 2002, when he pulled out of the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka after lying about the death of his grandmother.
Morton, 26, has kept his name in the frame thanks to some consistent performances in West Indies' domestic competitions, but he will have to be at his explosive best to reverse the momentum of a one-day series that has followed the pattern set in the Tests.
South Africa had lost 10 one-day games in a row until their 4-1 series victory over England in February. Since then, they have been unbeaten in 11 games, including a tie at Bloemfontein, and another 4-1 win in this series would enable them to leapfrog Pakistan in fourth place.
For West Indies, however, the need to turn their form around is more urgent, and as their convenor of selectors, Joey Carew, admitted, the Barbados match was a must-win situation. "We need to put the opposition under pressure a lot more than we have done in the first two games," he said. "With this squad we are looking forward to a positive result."
Two other names have been added to the frame for the third match: Fidel Edwards, the fast bowler who was rested for the fourth Test to hasten his rehabilitation from a back injury, and Xavier Marshall, the teenage batsman who cut his teeth in the VB Series in Australia.
West Indies squad Shivnarine Chanderpaul (capt), Chris Gayle, Xavier Marshall, Runako Morton, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Brian Lara, Dwayne Smith, Dwayne Bravo, Courtney Browne (wk), Corey Collymore, Daren Powell, Fidel Edwards, Ian Bradshaw.
South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Boeta Dippenaar, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Herschelle Gibbs, 5 Justin Ontong, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Justin Kemp, 8 Shaun Pollock, 9 Charl Langeveldt, 10 Andre Nel, 11 Makhaya Ntini.
