Being the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India is
often an unenviable job. Never more so than when the president has to
face the media. Most presidents so far have found the media to be
suspicious at best and outright hostile at worst. AC Muthiah was no
exception. The usually reticent Muthiah spoke briefly to scribes at
Bangalore and was clearly irritated at times.
Q: Was Kapil Dev's resignation discussed?
ACM: I told you yesterday. This is only a finance committee meeting.
Tomorrow is the working committee meeting and it may be discussed
there. So far I have not received any message from Kapil Dev What I
know is only what you have told me and one or two glimpses on
television. Other than that I have not heard anything else.
Q:Today Kapil Dev has said that the BCCI is not professional. What is
your response to that?
ACM: I have not heard about this. Each one is at liberty to say what
they like in this country. Freedom of speech. I must find out the
exact details. If he has said that, we'll discuss it tomorrow. I don't
understand in what context he has said we are not professional. Maybe
it's because we are all honourary members maybe it's because we have
not taken action based on any professional advice. Let us here from
him. We don't know whether he is making a general statement or a
complaint."
In whatever way Kapil Dev meant what he said, the BCCI and AC Muthiah
as its president are under fire. If the past is anything to go by,
they will respond in fitting fashion soon.
